Welcome to Librarium Online!
Well I have a 1500pt tournament on Saturday and have just found out that Special Characters are useable so I have pretty much written off my chances of winning but I want to put up a fight.
I usually go with infantry heavy lists and am unsure what to field. Anyone have any suggestions.
Is it worth me taking a sourcecer Lord or should I just go with a mauarder horder with some tooled up exalteds.
I'm thinking of
1 Exalted, Halberd, Talisman of Preservation, MOT
1 Exalted BSB, talisman of endurance, MOT
40 Mauderes, Great Weapons MOK 270pts
40 mauders Mok 270pts
40 Mauders, Great Weapons MOK 270pts
You're in a good place, bro. 1,500 is too low for the truly absurd special characters to make an appearance.
No love for Wulfrik for hunting your enemies' characters down? He also has the advantage of having an alternate delivery mechanism for a big block of Marauders. That's the no-brainer pick IMO. I don't know if Festus will also be available at this point total, but you could give him a look. And I would at least bring a Sorcerer with a Dispel Scroll, WoC already gives up the ability to play in the Shooting Phase, don't ditch Magic as well.
You got a fighting chance with wulfric if you want to run a special character other wise, those heavy shooting army's are going to rip your marauders to peices You wont have a chance to get to them before they put 200 shots into a marauder unit and make it flee off the board.
Warriors do loose shooting, but their lores are some of the best in the game even with out being updated for the new edition, Lore of tzeentch still have the ability to rip an entire unit from the field, and lore of Slaanesh brings up that very lovely Toughness test.
Combine Slaanesh and Nurgle lores in your list on level 2 Hero's they work well together, giving you the oprotunity to as well bring the magical power and defence with a channeling staff and a dispell scroll, or spell familiar, or infernal puppet
Suggested list is here (1500 Tournament list help for Whatfruit)

I'd definitely grab Wulfrik- with his boost against a "marked" enemy, he'll be better than anything your opponents can put on the field. And actually- don't worry about enemy special characters, most of the nasty ones aren't available under 2000pts. For example, Teclis is capped at a 2250 minimum, as are the best of the Chaos Daemon and Dark Elf characters. Really, your best bet would be to go with Warriors and use their Spec.Chars.
Wulfrik is good. Festus is broken if played properly, but more on that later. I'd also look into a L3 Sorc of Shadows, Infernal Puppet, Talisman of Preservation, and leave him at that. Why? Withering/Enfeebling+Curse of the Leper (guaranteed on Festy) is a unit-killer.
Now, about the rest of your list:
DON'T WASTE TIME ON ANYTHING BUT TROOP CHOICES!
We have the BEST troops in the game, no lie, and we have the most expensive auxiliary choices. Your best bet is to take a good look at your typical Warriors of Chaos list, and then swap each Warrior regiment for a block of 20-25 Marauders. There is one exception: your "chosen" block. Rather than fielding actual Chosen, field the following block of Warriors:
17 Warriors of Chaos, Mark of Khorne, Additional Handweapons, Razor Standard
That's now 17 guys with a 4+3++, rocking forward a massive 30 attacks, 5 of which should autowound thanks to Poison, the rest of which should do well against anything else. If you swap the Razor for the Flaming Banner, they're a little less effective against Infantry but become absolutely lethal to Regen monsters.
If you add anything else to the list, you can swap an Anvil regiment out for a Warshrine with the MoT
I've never used wulfrick and personally think he is overrated.
I'd def take a mage lord with shadows. almost all other armies can bring mage lords for alot less points than us so unless you want to be at a disadvantage in the magic phase, the mage lord is essential. Shadows is my personal favorite lore as it doesn't cost any extra and all the spells are useful.
That is a ton of maraders and it will hack your opponent to pieces, but it is also alot of frenzie that can easily be exploited by a seasoned general. if the giant isn't ASF don't bother, and even then it's iffy. any shooting will make short work of this guy, even bows, sheer volume and lack of any save will drop him before he can do anything.
And pretty much all the hero choice special characters are allowed so if you want something grab any of them, but you would have to base your entire list around them.
I'd just stay with a mage lord and a BSB optional. run your hordes 2x @50 each MoK and GW. . . . full command should cost you 300pts so not sure where your numbers are coming from. add a unit of warriors or chosen or something, just to mix it up. I feel your list is too mono-tone to be versitile.
What models do you have at your disposal?
Warhammer Fantasy: Warriors of Chaos, High Elves
Warhammer 40k: Eldar, Space Marines, Orks
Hi thanks for all the suggestions.
I have pretty much everything in the book at my disposal other than Ogres, Shaggoth, trolls and the Hellcannon.
I do like the Soucerer Lord of shadow but at a 1500pts tournament I just do not using one as a viable option because of the massive point sink that he is. For the same price I could get 2 basic Sourcers and still have enough left to buy half an exalted.
I am thinking of running Festus, I have never run him before but the idea of MOK warriors with poisoned attacks and a 5+ regenerate save for 185 points is to good to pass up.
At the moment i'm leaning
Festus the LeechLord - 185
Neil the Pitied
Exalted BSB Talismaan of Presevation, Halberd, MOT - 194
40 Maurders - H & Sheilds - MoT, Full Command (5 x Steadfast immovable objects - 240
40 Mauraders - GW - MOK , Full Command(10 x4) - 240
17 Chaos Warriors , MOK, Add hand weapons, Mus, standard 320 - festus goes here
5 dogs- 30pts
5 dogs- 30pts
At the moment that gives me 1239 pts. I need at least 2 units of dogs for screening purposes, fantatics etc. I'm not sure if I have enough models for another big block of maurderers.
I am considering a warshrine and giving favour to my exalted for altering the results, maybe wailing banner on the unit of warriors to use the glitch but I find warshrines only worth it if you work them in pairs.
I do like Lord Boraks build for a cheap 3rd level sourcer, does the MOT only effect casting rolls or does it also help with dispel rolls?
Edit: The other armies likely to be in attendence are
Empire - the guy who plays these is probably the best tactical player in our group I have never seen him lose game. Usually runs a balanced list with ArchLector, Warrior preists, lots of infantry, a horde of great swords and a mortar or cannon.
Dwarfs- 2nd best player standard gun line of thuderes, organ gun mixed with longbeards and thanes.
Skaven- This guy loves clan skyre so lots of warp weapons will definitely bring a doomwheel
Lizardmen- Stegadon, Skink preist spam
Tomb Kings x 2 The newbies
Another Dwarf and a another WOC player who plays a mono khorne army.
Also a goblin player who just has 100's of gobbos, lots of fanatics, and trolls

looks pretty nasty. Grab a Banner for those Chaos Warriors even if it's a cheap Banner like the Standard of discipline, flaming banner or Radiant Standard. Personally I'd grab flaming attacks for those inevitable regenerating gribblies.
As for the Marauders. I'd go all Great Weapons. I like Tzeentch Great weapon Units. They still pack a punch and wont loose their Mark if they loose a fight. A 6+ Ward saves quite a few too. up to you though! I know a lot of people like Khorne.I'm afraid not. Just +1 to cast. Knowing 3 spells with +3 to cast is pretty nasty though. Or you could forget magic and just grab a Level 1 with the 3rd Eye and a Dispel scroll. This gives you a lot of spare points to spend on other hitting things......... Although you've grabbed Festus so that advice is pretty much null.I do like Lord Boraks build for a cheap 3rd level sourcer, does the MOT only effect casting rolls or does it also help with dispel rolls?
The idea with the Mot Hand weapon and sheild unit is to survive long enough for other guys to get a flank charge. Am tempted to get another unit of vanilla warriors with MOk run 2 x 6 to hit flanks.
The MOK 4 x 10 unit puts out a whopping 40 attacks if it hits with three ranks and find that this will most likely gain me the win in combat. The idea for the Maudraders in 5 x 8 block came from reading Prince of Darkness Skaven Tactia in that stubborn is based on ranks not rank bonus and even works if you are attacked in the flank ranks still count for stubborn. With MOK being hit in the flank with 8 man line still puts out 16 S5 attacks which a few times has even allowed me to win combat.
