Simple Question: How do you build a decent all-comers WoC list for low point games?
Heroes and Lords: At the high cost of our characters careful consideration in this area seems vital. Can you fit a bsb and a useful caster? Is going without magic an option?
The Troops: Even small units of Warriors/Chosen (12) or Knights (5) chew through the meager points allowance in no time. Do we bench these iconic units in small games? If you'd take them how would you use them in order for them to earn their points back in enemy corpses before they get whittled down to uselessness?
Over the next couple of months I'll be playing in a local tournament circuit in which we'll have 1000, 1200, and 1500 point events. As a newcomer to WHFB I expect a thorough thrashing at the hands of the more experienced generals, but going in with a horrible list will just make it easier on them. Thanks for any suggestions; I can use all the wisdom you vets care to share!
At such low points totals, the way to go is magic and Marauders, if you ask me. Bring a block of at least 40 Marauders with Great Weapons and Mark of Khorne, a Sorcerer Lord if you can (admittedly, he will have to be a bit vanilla), toss in some Warriors or Chosen for spice and some Dogs for chaff, and let 'er rip! I'd leave the BSB at home - re-rolls for Ld tests don't matter as much when you're Immune to Psychology (and that's part of what Frenzy does for you).

Agreed - the marauder block of Khorne/GW's is very good value for points [40 is good, 50 is better] and a Sorcerer Lord is also important [shadows is popular right now].
I'm guessing Chosen will be a bit too pricey, but 18 Warriors + MoT/Warshrine is safe. Then grab one/two sets of dogs for screening.
There is such a thing as a BSB/Caster, but it's very risky unless you have puppet on another hero [even then it's still risky]. Safer to get an MoT/Exalted who can swap with your Lord [shadow signature spell] if things get hot in CC.

I ran a 1000 pt army with two blocks of 12 warriors (one with Champion and Blasted Standard), one block of 18 Marauders, Five dogs, Sorc Lord of Fire (lvl 3 w/ spell familiar), and a BSB with Rage banner.
Worked pretty darn well for me.
well just made one for you
i personally wouldn't go for a lord choice
made a 1400 list with:
lvl2 sorc, spell fam, 5+ws, charmed shield (i would take fire )
BSB, MOT, halberd, 6+ws, armor of zhrakk
14 warriors, shields, MoT, full command, rupturous standard
36 marauders, Khorne, GW, full command
2 units of 5 hounds to screen
5 knights, MoK, muso and SB
you have 3 nice units, 2 good chars, a cannon and 2 units to screen/protect others from shooting
things you don't like you can swap for more or others
I think as everyone said marauders are a very cost effective option and work well in low point (or pretty much any point) games.
The list I often run at 1500 is like this:
Lvl 1, MoT, Spell Familiar, Charmed Shield, Golden Eye of Tzeentch, Disc, Stream of Corruption
Festus: XX pts
12 Warriors: 262pts
MoK, Halberds, Shields, Standard, Musician, Banner of Eternal Flame
45 Marauders: 275pts
MoK, Great Weapons, Full command
5 Warhounds: XX pts
5 Knights of Chaos: 295pts
MoN, Banner of Rage, Banner, Musician
Chaos Chariot: 130pts
It's quite similar to the list Krull put up, and I've found it to work.
Festus goes in the Marauders, adding survivability there. The sorceror on disc functions like a lvl 2 (2 spells, +2 to cast), can use stream of corruption to take out large hordes (str3 breath template), and can cast magic or engage warmachines.
Overall no single part of the army holds the majority of the hitting power, but each of the main sections (2 chariots, knights, warriors, marauders) can deal out a lot of damage. I know chariots aren't quite as effective in 8th, but at 1500 pts units will often be a bit smaller (25-30 ) so a duel chariot charge is a serious threat. The warriors have also been very effective against monsters (Hellpit, Hydra) with flaming attacks at high initiative.
The biggest problem is the lack of leadership or BSB in the army. But you have to pay a fair bit to get that extra reliability so that's your call.

I'm surprised more people don't use a Sorc of fire at low points. There are a lot of DD spells and even a hex that does damage on a successful cast. Admittedly, it keeps my sorc from being on a disk, but I've had good luck.
