Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hey guys, the moderators have been discussing ways to generate more activity across LO as a whole. There have been some really good suggestions as far as focusing the content of the forums somewhat so that we don't have quite so many dead sections, but I also pointed out our thriving little Warriors community as a shining beacon of what all of LO could hopefully become. So now I'm turning to you guys for ideas - what do you think makes our WoC section so active and so great, while other sections are so neglected?
Warriors are an older army, we're top tier but not the best, so I don't think it has anything to do with "more people play warriors = more traffic". Yeah, a lot of people do play them, but we've all got secondary armies as well, or a different, primary army. Why aren't people off discussing the Lizardmen, who are possibly one of the best armies out there? Why aren't they talking it up over in the High Elf or Skaven sections? Usually only 2 or 3 of the WHFB army forums are consistently showing new posts. What gives?
Do you guys think that it's the little User-generated things that we have, like the Coverting/Painting threads, the Paint Contest we've got going on, 'Experiences' thread and "New to WoC" guide? If these things were implemented across all of the army sections, both in WHFB and WH40k, do you think that it would increase activity, or do you think it would slow down the other sections, namely the Hobby and Batrep sections?
As a Mod it's my job not to play favorites. Some of you might remember that I do lurk around on almost all of the WHFB sections, keeping tabs on new posts and trying to make sure that most threads are replied to by at least somebody. I'd like to tell you all to go take your enthusiasm for Warriors and spread it around to other sections like a glorious plague of Nurgle's Rot, but I know that not all of you play other armies. I want to see all of LO be as active and friendly as our WoC section, and I really think that part of what makes this section what it is, is the quality of the veteran posters here.
So what do you guys think?
WoC seem to have a lot of variety with combining items/marks/heroes, also we have lots of troop types, things like EotG, and access to a lot of magic trickery. I'd say it's the variety that keeps things interesting - other armies like High Elves, Lizardmen, and Bretonians look pretty repetitive. Only Empire seems to offer any real comparable depth [Skaven don't count for me - they belong to a broken set of rules outside of Fantasy].
Also it's the fact that the veterans keep sharing & helping new players, and do it with a sense of comedy/style that the other forums seem to lack.

I think that WoC is an army that has everything. We have tons of excellent models, ample conversion opportunities and above all we have an army that can use almost anything from its army book and still be competitive! While in many other armies that have suffered the strain of years far more than WoC have, the discussions of what to use and how to use it has crystalized into a form of consensus, or at least a few schools of thought. With WoC the possible competitive armies we can build are so much larger in number that the discussions will never run dry, at least not in a long while. Chaos players also tend to be... passionate... about their army, I reckon a few of you out there have made or want to make a secret shrine to Nurgle in your closet
Since I started my High Elf army this summer I really started appreciating WoC even more, I came to a rude awakening that every army out there is not as spoiled as we are when it comes to awesome and apt-priced units and having everything as a viable option. And still High Elves are regarded as a pretty decent army, but they're still a butter knife next to the shining sword that is WoC.
We also have many players since Chaos is one of the oldest armies, and it exists both in 40k and Fantasy which makes for a lot of people who play Chaos in 40k to drop into fantasy Chaos. At least more so than the other armies which have no direct equivalent, or at least not as direct as Chaos/Chaos (Dark Elves/Dark Eldar and High Elves/Eldar could be discussed though. and Orcs/Orks...)
Warhammer Fantasy: Warriors of Chaos, High Elves
Warhammer 40k: Eldar, Space Marines, Orks
I think Chaos tends to be more 'interesting'. As Victor said our army has so many potions........... potions?.......... options it never really gets 'boring'. I've played Chaos for 18 years and I'm still itching to play with them and coming up with new ideas. We can do so many army builds that are as effective as they are interesting that we never get bored. If we've tried every army build then we go for a different mark.
On top of that we have, pretty much, and endless supply of conversion potential. The randomness of our background means the army is rich for those who love converting and background as much as those who love spilling blood and rolling dice. Look at Marines? Sure a lot of people hate them but people always play them because you can do so much with them. People love freedom and hate stagnation. The VC/Lizard board probably isn't as active because there are only a few 'builds' that can be done with the army, this becomes boring for the people who post there as every question is the same....... every army list is the same. I don't think we have that here.
Plus, everyone knows we worship the TRUE GODS!!!! and that's why they are hiding.
As for this Board, the Realm of Awesome, I think the 'passion' rubs off on other people (I really didn't mean for that to sound like it did) and enthusiasm is very contagious. If someone gets excited about, say, Vampires and puts up pictures of his/her army with awesome conversions I'm sure people will follow suit. Plus, if someone sees no one has posted in a board for 3 years *cough*Dogs of War*cough* then why on earth would they post there when they'd get no reply?
I think a 'standard bearer' for each board would be a good idea. Someone (or a group of members) who is enthusiastic about the army and in a way that gets others interested and posting. I don't mean a 'unit of the week' style topic as that gets old quick but a 'why I think my/our army is awesome and 'don't you agree' sort of thread.
Ps: We are Awesome.
yea let's see you "rub" some passion into people Borak! and do post pics lol
as for blowing life into the other forums.. I Think the overlord above me summed it up pretty well, if nobody have posted in a forum for a looong time, I definatly wouldn't post there. (that's pretty much a sure sign the forum is Dead! ) perhaps if the forums were kickstarted with some active threads it would attract people to LO.

Now now lads. This is a forum about grown men playing with toy soldiers. Lets be adults please.
It's a bit hard to put my finger on it (no Borak, not that!) but the WoC boards here are, in my opinion simply the best board for WoC armies (better than chamber of the everchosen) where the other boards face more stiff (see what I did there?) competition from Underempire, Bugmans, Demonic legion etc. Ie, some of the army-dedicated boards got some very good players sharing tips and tricks, good tactical discussions and so on
As humble as he cares to be Borak hit the nail on the head as far as I'm concerned. There are veteran players here, who are open to newbie players with their newbie questions. And there is a lot of support for players of all stripes. heck, we've even had players from other armies come in here and as how to beat us, which I would think could have turned out badly. But no, we all gave him the best advice we could think of. Frankly, the friendliness of this board is what drew me here as a greenling.
I know "Success breeds success" isn't the best advice. But I would think if you could consolidate the boards as you suggest, and try your best to just get one or two folks to post on there regularly and post pictures of their armies, and respond in as friendly and supportive manner as possible, that should start to draw people in... and hopefully, success breeds success.
I agree that the WoC community here is awesome because of all the discussion that goes on here on a daily basis. People are willing to share ideas and give feedback, and that's a self-perpetuating thing, because new players looking around to decide what army they want to play will gravitate to forums where there's a lot of activity.
I'm around a lot of sections myself (my main army is Beastmen, plus I lurk around the forums of the armies that my friends play), and I can tell you that I think the main reason why those sections don't get a lot of new activity is that you have to have an established base of veteran guys that are interested and willing to provide advice. I've tried to get topics off the ground in the Beastmen forum, and it's hard, because in a lot of cases I'll get one person, and then they won't post again, so I'm basically talking to myself. However, you look at specialized forums like the Herdstone or the Ogre Stronghold, and they're buzzing with activity, because there are people there who care, and are around.
It also helps that WoC is a pretty good army right now - I know I can attribute at least part of the inactivity in the Wood Elves and Bretonnia forums (even the specialized ones) to the fact that they're not very good armies right now, especially the Wood Elves.

All the vets have replied so let me speak for the nubs.
Had it not been for the likes of Borak, Viktor, Lolthien and yourself Captain (I know I'm leaving others out but seriously, is your internets ego that big?) then I wouldn't have bothered staying on at this forum.
I have posted a handful of times in the Beastmen forum because I started a Beastmen army and that can be attributed solely to Rothgar who pretty much is one of the only people that really regularly answers posts in the Beastmen forum. That forum doesn't have a rich group of veterans like WoC.
So here if I post a thread about an army or a question or whatever it might be and Borak is off galavanting in Australia then Viktor might pick it up. Or if he's gone then Captain would and so on and so forth. There's always someone who wants to answer questions and whats better is (as a nub) none of the vets ever say anything like "Seriously? You're asking about Forsaken? Get a clue and do a forum search, stop wasting our time."
I browse most of the army forums but I see thread after thread go unanswered and then I kind of stop browsing.
I will drink your milk shake! I will drink it up!
I just bought my wife a mini-van, the gods of Chaos have nothing on reality.
