Hey WoC forumites! I'm a newbie to both the hobbie and these forums (just made account) and I require an answer! The local GW is having an event for its birthday where everyone can take any lord from their army book and a 400 point retinue comprising 1 unit.
I am taking Archaon (of course) and was hoping to take either a unit of chosen or knights. I just wanted to know what the best composition would be for his retinue. Thanks in advance.
80 GW marauders, of course!

With Archaon I would personally take the following unit, as it is a successful build that I have been using recently (albeit with one extra knight):
7 knights 395pts
Razor standard, Tzeentch, standard bearer,
With 2, or 3 from the champion strength 5 armour piercing attacks and an extra attack from the mount, this unit is enough to make a mockery of any accompanying retinue, while Archaon kills off the enemy hero (which he easily should), as well as a 1+ armour save and 5+ ward save, the champion is only their because of leftover points. You will also have the maneuverability to be able to choose the best moment to attack and if lucky get a flank charge.

I like this a lot. I was wondering if I should take a champion in the unit, just in case anyone brings any uber hero-killers that I'm afraid Archaon can't handle. Any alternatives to the champion/options for the last 5 points?
I think Archaon's rules state he HAS to take a unit of knights right? Also, if I were you I'd activate his sword as soon as he gets into combat. In 1v1 action I think any other named hero is going to have serious trouble with him.
Going over his stats again, this guy is crazy good. He effectively has two ward saves: a reverse save on a 1 or 2 since all attacks have to roll a 3+ to wound, even auto hits(!), then his normal 3+ save. And that's not included the fact every attack, both ranged and CC, are at -1 to hit. And against magic his ward save is 1+.
He gives his unit ItP, ignores armor saves (with up to 10 attacks!) and treats all terrain as open ground. He's a Lvl2 sorc of Tzeentch with +1 to cast his spells.
I realize I'm preaching to the converted here... but is there ANY named hero in the game that holds a candle to this guy?
