Hi. I'm new to Warhammer - and I want to get a Hordes of Chaos army together. I've just bought the army book and I'm confused. Looking at the models and from what I've read - I'd like a quick moving cavalry based force.
I'd like to use lots of Chaos Knights and back them up with Marauder Horseman and Warhounds. I also like the models for Fleshhounds of Khorne and Mounted Daemonettes so I'd like to use them as well.
The problem I have is I have no idea of what sort of mix/numbers would be effective.
What I have in mind at the moment is:
Exalted Champion (mounted + sheild) -143
+sword of battle
with 4 Chaos Knights -132
2x 5 Chaos Knights (+champ) -370
5 Chosen Chaos Knights (+champ) -245
2x 5 Mounted Daemonettes -300
5 Flesh Hounds of Khorne -80
2 x 5 Marauder Horsemen -130
2 x 6 Chaos Warhounds -72
Now, I have no idea if this would be effective - having never played. Just wondering if it's worth thinking along these lines or if I'm better off just fielding the usual chaos warriors and bloodletters.
I would really appreciate any ideas from you lovely experienced gamers so I can kick the poo out of all who oppose me. Mwuhahahaha!
You need atleast 5 chaos knights, it's the minimum unit size, even if you have a hero in the unit.Exalted Champion (mounted + sheild) -143

When you expand the army i suggest you get a chariot or two. Tuskgor chariots are cheaper then normal chaos chariots, consider those..
Thanks for that - I just assumed that the hero would make up the numbers. Oh, and I am totally hypnotised by your avatar.Originally posted by WiCkEdRock@Oct 19 2004, 13:21

The guy with the cool avatar is wrong. The correct unit size for Chaos Knights is 4+. Page 61, Hordes of Chaos.
Thanks! Yeah, ok he may be wrong - but look at The Avatar. Oooooh.Originally posted by Tzeentch@Oct 19 2004, 15:36

I have to say that I hate the Mounted Daemonettes in an otherwise all Khorne army. BTW, does your Exalted have the mark of Khorne?
I'd agree that the Daemonettes don't fit with the feel of the army, but the models are just so damn pretty that I just want to own them. Saying that, it's not exactly the biggest force in the world as it stands and that 300 pts can buy a lot of Flesh Hounds and Marauder Horsemen which probably go with the Khorne theme a lot better.Originally posted by Tzeentch@Oct 19 2004, 17:24

Mark of Khorne - It's things like this I've not quite decided on. I'm not too sure I want people running off uncontrollably when I'm inexperienced. Although with that sort of line-up what else am I going to do but CHAAARGE!
OK. To control Khorne-induced frenzied knights, there's nothing better than Chaos Hounds. A unit of 6-8 will screen them from shooting and control their line of sight until you can get to the enemy. I'd drop the Mounted Nettes, bulk up the Flesh Hounds to 8 (just because sacred numbers are cool), and spend the rest on hounds. Deploy them in front of your knights, and keep them in front to control the frenzy. If someone charges, just flee. Or let them get slaughtered. Doesn't matter. Just as long as you set up the distance between the hounds and Knights so that you get a counter charge.
Aye, frenzie is good and bad... I started with a Khorne army and quickly switched as I found people were forcing me out of formation with gimp units, then flanking me and such... It was a mess...
Keep in mind the calvalry that you mentioned is great, but it's heavy, so it doesn't move, nor follow the sweet rules of fast calvalry...
Also know that heavy calvary units, especially those with Knights and with a hero is going to be the first target for any kind of artillery... My first experience with this mess was with Dwarves where I had a chosen knight unit with a hero that got slaughtered by cannons before they ever got into combat... It was just horrible... Now I use calvary, but only for flanking or if I'm able to screen the knights (still almost impossible against cannon fire and such) and then have them charge into something...
I'd suggest reducing your calvary units to just just 1 unit of knights, keep you fast calv (marauders) [as these will help get behind the enemy to flank and hit from the rear and reduce their rank bonus' etc.] and 1 unit of dogs (if you want them, or remove them altogether as you have Flesh Hounds)... Then with the points, field 1-2 units of warriors (1 chosen 1 regular) and maybe a unit or two of marauders...
Now you're probably think Marauders? Why on earth would I... Wait right there... These guys serve me one purpose - cannon fodder as I like to call it... They help screen my troops from range attacks, so that my true death dealers (warriors) can get into combat and rip stuff up...
I know you hadn't chosen a mark yet... Read up on the various marks and choose one that best suits your playing style... I really like the Tzeentch armies, for their marked champions are level 2 wizards... Nothing like having a hero that can go toe to toe with the latest and greatest AND cast spells at the same time... For me against dwarves it's been fantastic...
Let us know what you choose though...
Strangely enough - I've decided to give Chaos a miss - and go with Lizardmen. Couldn't resist when I saw some of the models in t'shop.Originally posted by Sirayn@Oct 27 2004, 23:20
