I am playing only friendly games, and we agreed to play without magic.
For now my 40 marauders played a very little role - in one game they kept Elven lord on dragon busy for 3 turns, in other game they were slaughtered by Khornate Lord on Manticore. I used them with MoK and GW.
But I have 40 more of them on sprues, and want to do something interesting. I have a pile of ideas, and I suppose most of them are not viable, so please tell me what will and what will not work, plus may be you have some great suggestions on the matter?
- make 80-strong 'deathstar', with MoK/GW, add few heroes. Negative sides are obvious - I have a deathstar of warriors already, and still single Lord will hold this whole horde for as long as he needs.
- add MoN, Festus and use them as many-many cheap wounds, to save some warriors and chosen.
- put them with Wulfrik on Seafang to backstab some bastards.
- use 10-man cheap units for screening.
- combine any of options above, because I have 80 of them, and that's plenty.
I am no expert by any means (compared to some people here) but I will put out some thoughts.
Wulfriks special deployment isn't as good as it sounds. You have to consider the chance of him not showing up at all.
80 strong Deathstar would be very hard to manuver and would have HUGE flanks.
I would say MoT and Festus would be better then MoN.
The Ten man death squads are possible with MoS, but eight? If you want that many drops take dogs.
Go with two 40 man groups and avoid lords. Go against weaker rank and file units and leave Characters and elite Units to the Units in the armour. A chaos lord kitted out for it can murder most things in a challenges. So do Exalteds. Knights, Chosen and even the "basic" Warrior can take most things in close combat and live to see more fights. Their problem is their lack of great numbers. There maruders come in. They can deal with hordes and other large units and help the Chaos armoured fellows get supporting charges in.
Then a question: How did you lose against single Lords? Where they supported with units? If the marauders have a banner and are deployed in horde they have +4 static Combat Res and Steadfast? You should have been able to wound them a bit with GWs. Did you have a mage character and had to challenge?
I mean no offense. I have lost with better odds.
I guess it all depends on what you want to get out of the Marauders. What I would do, and what I hope to do not all that far in the future, is two big units with either MoS or Mok and Great Weapons, maybe flails if I'm fighting things that I won't last long against. I use them to hold an enemy up for a couple rounds of combat and slowly grind them down some. As such, I send my Marauders against anything that scares me. Big deathstar units, nasty monsters, you name it. I don't care if the Marauders die, that's what I take them for, so long as they beat up whatever unit I throw them against. I don't ever expect them to win combat against anything more imposing than Empire Swordsmen, but I DO expect them to put the hurt on whatever they wind up in combat with.
I have 108 marauders myself:
20 flails, painted Khorne red
20 mixed weapons, painted khorne red
32 tattooed blue Tzeentch with shields [each one has its own tattoo - took AGES]
30 unpainted with great weapons [hammers & axes] which will look awesome one day
6 unpainted with empire heads, heroic poses, funky weapons
I run them in two big fat blocks of 50 with MoK/FC/GW's and they have become notorious ever since. Most people do a double take when they see the sheer size of my army, and if I'm feeling really evil I throw in 2 MoT warshrines.
Oh, and they make high elves cry.

And what do you think about MoN for Marauders? Shield + armour will not work anyway because even rats with halberds will do S5 hits (with that jumping samurai), parry + MoT will do no good because their morale is too low, any foe with Fear or Terror will make them suffer, MoK is good, but only in cases when they can win and have MoK for more than 1 turn, and MoN will make them less vulnerable, will it not?
I've switch to a heavier marauder army since finding out how good they can bee when your rolls are even off
I run two units of 30 marauders, Mark of Tzeentch Light armour, Shield, Full command
Then i run a unit of 20 Marauders, Mark of Khorne, Great weapons
Two 5+/5++ Combat soakers, and a naked whirling death ball
