So I have not mean playing fantasy for too long but I just recently finished my dragon and I want to use it. I realize that dragons are very risky but I’m curious if 2500 points is a large enough game to even consider taking one.
If I do take one then I will probably have no other characters so should I completely forgo magic and put a tooled Chaos lord on top or should I invest in a sorcerer who will probably in combat on the dragon most of the game.
It should be noted that may go up against a triple hydra dark elf list and I think a dragon would fair far better than my knights against them.
Anyways, thoughts? Too risky to run without heavy magic support or somewhat plausible if there is terrain to hide from artillery
I love running my Lord on chaos dragon as he can usually just eat units by himself. When I do take him I also usually field a unit of trolls to help keep him safe from cannons. Just deploy him behind them and keep him either behind them or other terrain until you are close enough for a charge.
Eh a marked chaos lord on a dragon gives you about 30 points of MI's
You're not completely without magic. You can still take hero level sorcerers.

Putting a lord on a chaos dragon is certainly something I would love to sport in a big game. I don't have a model atm, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with it, have fun eating your opponents hordes of infantry

2500 is kind of pushing it, as you mentioned it will overbalance you in combat and leave your magic lacking. But it's not a terrible choice, just a riskier one.
I don't actually think the matchup with a hydra is that good. The Handlers of the hydra can throw plenty of attacks of their own, and the hydra itself isn't a chump in combat. comined with his regen i see it as a fairly even fight, not something you want to spend 500-600 points on to take out a 175pt model.
I find dragon ogres can be pretty good at ripping a hydra apart. . . . assuming they survive the boltthrower fire.
Why yes you can Mr.Fox, but you can also field a chaos lord on dragon with stream of coruption and bust all breath weapons with a stomp and wipe out a horde and giggle then die to shooting
galrauch is an option but I wouldn't reccomend him as he is kinda cheesy. His special breath in paticular can really, really ruin someone's day.
I'm not saying he's no good, cause he is. but i think it would be more fun/challenge/sporting to try and build a regular character on a dragon
