Welcome to Librarium Online!
This should probably go in the army list section but hey-hum.........
Hey guys. Just out of curiosity, what lists do you use and why? I'm not after the uber death Tournament lists you could take (or do use occasionally) I'm after the list you use on an every day basis against your mates or the one you always have to hand. If you always use a tourney style list then fine, put it up. Then let us know why you've taken the choices you have and, if you're inclined, put some simple background up as well.
Now I'd rather this thread didn't get derailed by advice on army lists, better units to take and why. If some one wants advice give it but that isn't what this thread is about
I only have time to put one up before work so you'll have to wait for the other.....
Varka the Betrayer
Sorcerer Lord, MoT, Preservation, Rune Sword, Charmed shield.
11 Chosen, MoT, Shields, Halberds, Champ & Std, Favour, Banner of Rage.
18 Warriors, MoT, Shields, Std, Musi
18 Warriors, MoT, Dual Weapons, Std, Musi
2x 5 Forsaken
The Chosen few
The Gibbering Twins
Giant (new Ettin model!!!)
That's 2000pts. Not exactly a bunch of 'competetive' choices but hey, I'm not that kind of guy Stuff I've taken is based on fluff so a Warrior Mage who likes turning people into Spawn and/or mutating people who he deems unworthy of joining his side or who have gotten a little too big for their boots. (So he splats them before they grow in power). I like all my units to be different and have their own personality hence why every unit has a different weapon outfit.
The other one will be up in 7hrs or so. Yay.............
EDIT: Now I'm back!!!
This is my 3000pt Marauder list that I've been tinkering on since 5th Edition and is the one that is linked in my Sig It's all finished now and wont be changing.....ever.... well, until we get a new book that is!! Again, this is built around fluff and what looks cool and what, in my mind, would be in a Marauder Tribe.
K'Tor, thrice Bloodied, Lord of Vengeance
Lord, MoT, Preservation, Damnation, Potion of Foolhardiness, Great Weapon.
Brakka, Herald of Vengeance
BSB, MoT, Morrsleib, Biting blade, Shield.
Swords of Vengeance
16 Chosen, MoT, Shields, Full Cmd, Wailing Banner, Favour.
Seks Steel Reavers
36 Marauders, MoT, Std, Musi, Great Weapons
Thorgrimms Steel Reavers
36 Marauders, MoT, Srd, Musi, Shields.
10 Horsemen, MoS, Spears, Shields, Armour
10 Horsemen, MoS, Spears, Shields, Armour
6x 5 Hounds
The Alter of Vengeance
Th'Zaar the Cursed.
Level 4 Shadow Sorcerer, Puppet, Armour of Destiny
Gorfeld the Hermit
Level 1 Death Sorcerer, Scroll, 3rd Eye.
I like the idea here. My main army is Blood Angels and I have a "fluffy" army list I've built that has a good progression from 1,000 points up to 3,000 points in 500-point intervals, which allows me to take a themed force at most points levels I'll ever have to play at. I'm trying to come up with something similar for my Warriors of Chaos army and, once I feel I've got it sorted, I'll definitely post up the various stages of progression.
Is there a reason you don't take Marauders in your army? If you're looking at a fluffy list, I would have thought Marauders would have to be about the first units you include. Unless, of course, your Sorcerer is an established Lord who likes to roam the countryside with his chosen few, only accepting those who show they have the true skill to fit into his elite warband.
I make one list, and that's the list I plan to use whether it's in a tournament or in a friendly. We have a solid, competitive playgroup around here, so you don't see people pulling many punches in list-building. Here's what I'd roll out with if I had to play a game with Warriors today:
Dark Northmen - 2,500 points:
Core - 1,091 points:
40 Chaos Marauders, Great Weapons, Mark of Khorne, Musician, Standard-Bearer
4 x 5 Chaos Warhounds
18 Chaos Warriors, Full Command, Mark of Tzeentch, Shields, Standard of Discipline [BSB and Sorcerer Lord go here]
18 Chaos Warriors, Full Command, Halberds, Mark of Khorne, Shields, Banner of Eternal Flame [Chaos Sorcerer goes here... ?]
Special - 510 points:
10 Chaos Knights, Full Command, Mark of Tzeentch, Blasted Standard
Rare - 205 points:
Heroes - 334 points:
Exalted Hero, BSB, Halberd, Ironcurse Icon, Mark of Tzeentch, Talisman of Preservation
Chaos Sorcerer, Dispel Scroll, Third Eye of Tzeentch [Lore of Fire]
Lords - 380 points:
Sorcerer Lord, Armor of Destiny, Biting Blade, Infernal Puppet, L4 Wizard [Lore of Shadows]
Grand Total: 2,500 points
For the ten or so games I have had with my WoC I have used the same army, it has changed a bit since it's first inception but it's essence has remained unchanged!
Level 2 Sorceror; Dispel Scroll; Enchanted Shield; Dragonbane Gem; Lore of Fire 165
Exalted Battle Standard Bearer; Mark of Tzeentch; Halberd; Talisman of Preservation; Ironcurse Icon; 199
17 Chaos Warriors; Full Command; Halberds; Shields; Banner of Rage; 354 (BSB here)
17 Chaos Warriors; Full Command; Halberds; Shields; Mark of Khorne; Banner of Eternal Flame; 349
40 Marauders; Standard; Musician; Mark of Khorne; Great Weapons; 242
5 Warhounds; 30
5 Warhounds; 30
7 Chaos Knights; Musician; Mark of Khorne; 320
Scyla Anfingrimm; 105
Only lost a single game so far (against my very own Dark Elf tournament army which my friend used for a game) and I have been pleased with most things. Scyla is both fluffy (for my army, anyway) and fun to use - love his randomness! The Hellcannon has been... um, less than spectacular... It has been suggested that I find points from somewhere to give the Banner of Rage warriors the mark of Tzeentch for a 5+ ward save against warmachines, but I just don't know where to get those points from!
Yeah, so... Good times
My stock-standard 2500pts lists are as follows:
L4 Sorc Lord w/ Puppet, Talisman of Preservation, Lore of Shadows
BSB w/ MoT, Book of Secrets, Dispell Scroll, 3rd Eye, Shield, Lore of Fire
Wulfrik the Wanderer
Festus the Leechlord
16 Warriors w/ Halberds, Shields, SB, Musician, Banner of Rage
15 Warriors w/ MoT, Shields, SB, Muso
14 Warriors w/ MoT, Shields, SB, Muso
29 Marauders w/ MoS, GWs
Warshrine w/ MoT
My other list swaps out Wulfrik, Festus, 3rd Eye on my BSB, the Marauders, and my Warshrine for the following:
Exalted w/ MoK, Juggernaut, Sword of Swift Slaying, Talisman of Protection
Exalted w/ MoK, Juggernaut, Sworf of Battle, Helm of Many Eyes
8 Chaos Knights w/ MoT, Blasted Standard, Standard Bearer
(all these ride together, creating a unit 6 wide, with 11ASF attacks up front, 10 Knight attacks, 2 steed attacks, 4 Juggernaut attacks, and 2 Stomps - they rip though just about everything, and they should, for the 840pts they cost)
I posted both lists because my group doesn't really play with anything less than a competitive build. I've placed in the top 5 of just about every tournament that my first list has been entered in. The second list originated during a campaign where special characters were not allowed. It is the same list that I would enter into a tournament with the same restrictions, except that I would drop the Juggernauts and mount the Exalteds on regular Steeds, and add 2 Knights to the regiment instead.
I also have a few other goofy lists that I break out once in a while - especially against very new or inexperienced players where I don't have to give as much of a challenge. I believe that a new player gains more appreciation for a close-fought loss, than a "given" win, so my entry level lists are probably more in line with LO's ideas of a 'friendly' army.
My standard fun vs. all comers list as follows:
Yrian the Fallen
Sorcerer lvl 4 [Death]
Favor of the Gods
Really strong caster with no fear of enemy characters at all. The linchpin of the army - I just wish I could squeeze Phylactery in there.
Zhraka son of Zhrakk
Battle Standard Bearer
Bronze Armor of Zhrakk
Talisman of Endurance
This guy is my all round monster slayer and does pretty well in challenges too.
I really enjoy puking all over elite elf units with a breath weapon template.
The Dread Legion
Often even more deadly than their Khorne brothers - thx to shrine.
The Dying Embers
Anything Big, Cavalry, T4+ or in a building is assigned to these guys.
Bodyguard of Throgg [5 Trolls]
Warshrine of Tzeentch
Generally speaking this list creams most opponents, I like to give my Tzeentch unit Aspect of the Dreadknight and then shoot it with a blessing. I don't really worry about my Lord too much since most opponents are scared of his Lore and avoid his unit like the plague. The two small units of Marauders always pay off in terms of points invested.

Wait... how many Trolls are in this list? You forgot to mention that.
The first list is an army I only really started in 7th Edition. So it was a change from the Norm seeing as I'd used a Marauder based list since the year Dot pretty much. Background wise Tzeentch has deemed to gift him (Varka) with glimpses of the possible future but denied him the ability to see into the past. He's been wandering the wastes for countless years in search of an item......or someone.........or a place. He's been wandering so long he's forgotten what he was looking for and, even, who he is and how he came to be in the wastes in the first place.
This is my all-comers list I currently use right now, it does pretty well against most armies.
