Every time I hear about Shaggoth, I hear they are they are not worth their points and their are better options. Also they fall into the that category they are a cool model but not playable.
So minus all that what is what is the best way use a dragon ogre Shaggoth in a game?
The problem that most people have is their survivability. They don't have much of a save for their size, they're not exceptionally tough, and they don't pack many wounds. You can down one with a concentrated effort by some Archers if you're lucky.
If you're going to use them, use them the same way that Orcs use Giants and Beastmen use their Giant-sized models. Put them on a flank, and hope that your opponent decides that he has bigger things to worry about (hard, because most people aren't used to seeing a Shaggoth, and he's an intimidating looking model). Get him into combat, and he's going to wreck enemy units, provided he hits them in the flank and doesn't hit anything that could potentially down him with just a few attacks (great weapons, Poison, etc). Always go for units that you can ThunderStomp, to make sure that he gets the most out of his profile.
Also, Greatweapons are an option on this guy, but an additional handweapon is the best route - his strength is high enough that he'll easily wound the types of models he wants to be fighting (mostly infantry), and the extra attack will be more worthwhile than extra strength.
There are things to say for Kholek though. He is actually a worthwhile model, provided you can keep him safe from artillery like cannons, and killer-spells. He is the best anti-monster creature in the game, with his massive attacks and D3 wounds multiplier - I have put him up against a BoneCrusher Giant (Storm of Magic, currently one of the largest monsters in the game behind the WarMammoth) and killed it in a single round.
I've run a 'Dragon Ogre Army' featuring Kholek, Dragon Ogres, 2 Shaggoths for Rare, and a core of their Marauder followers. It was an awesome sight on the field, and most opponents are caught so off guard that they let you win through their own mistakes, but in a tournament, it wouldn't be a great army. There are just too many ways to take them down.
thanks for great input. Think when comes time expand my army I'll go with dragon ogres, and just try make them look like the Shaggoth.
High armour troops are good targets as his str 6 negates quite a bit of it. anything str 3 is safe, str 4 is good too. If you can pick low LD targets they may fail their terror test on the charge, or their fear tests in combat making him even more survivable.
The GW is actually pretty bad. it's awesome for the big stuff, but I4 beats most of his targets and since he dies pretty easy you want him hitting first, not last. can't count the # of times he died before he got to swing with that GW. . .
he isn't terribly effective for his points that is true, but he does his job very well. you have to run your army with multiple large targets tho, so something survives to make it actoss the field. I seem to have the best luck with him when i run a HC and knights to support him. they all got higher M values to keep pace with him, and it forces them to choose 1/3 to mow down before they get into combat (its always the shaggy).
