Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hey guys, after discussing in another thread, I decided to take on my first 8th Edition Army, and some of the ideas have me quite excited!
I'm going to go for a Celtic / Viking / Norse .. tribal theme to match my girlfriends Wood Elves - We're basing them in Albion.
I'll copy and paste from my last post and tidy it up a little:
Are there any suggestions for a base starting army? (I was looking at the battalions, but the chaos hounds are off putting, such ugly models IMHO)!
I'm not entirely sure how much points my girlfriend has, I think it's around 1.5k - 2.3k of Wood Elves or so maybe more I know she has more models but not sure if throwing them all in would be legal, then there's adding all the upgrades and what not, anyways..
We havn't played a game yet, so not sure of the army composition, but in raw points legal or not total she has 2.3-2.4k
So I guess i'll start with a base of 1.5-2.3k any suggestions? (if you could, I know i'm being a pain here, include the base sizes, as i'd like to use WE / DE / Dark Eldar models for my Casters / heroes / lords etc)
I was thinking:
1 x WoC Army Book
1 x Battalion (I know it's going to be suggested anyways)
1 x WoC
2 x Marauders
1 x Caster
1 x fighty person
1 x Giant / Shaggoth
1 x Marauder Horsemen / Chaos Knights / Savage Boar Boyz (see below)
Some type of caster, probably WE / DE what ever I find that fits the theme best. Spellweaver with staff / male spellsinger with staff (looks kinda of cool and Druidy).
A fighty type leader again same as above. WE hero on stag / Mounted Wood Elf Lord (not sure how good mounted leaders would be?) / Orion (minus his dogs / bow if they are dettachable) / Valten (foot model)
I was even looking at some of the Dark Eldar models here, I like the looks of - Lelith Hesperax and Dark Eldar Lhamaean / Dark Eldar Succubus...
Heck even one of the Dwarf Lord choices.. Dwarf Queen Helga? lol. So many cool options here.
I was looking at Savage Orc Boar Boyz... I wonder... will Marauders (the mounted ones) from the battalion fit on these boars, does anyone know? I could use them as either normal Marauder Horsemen or maybe Chaos Knights,
what do you think ?
Naturally suggestions and comments are extremely welcome - Oh I should note, we'll be doing doubles games when we're not fighting each other or going alone, for that reason I am wanting the '' meat shield '' type role, maybe with a unit or two I can keep back near her shooty stuff in case anything gets close to her units.
~ Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee ~
Cool concept - look forward to seeing what you can come up with.
So, I should drop the extra box of WoC and take another Marauder box?
Or should I drop the Battalion and get another 2 boxes of Marauders or something? - That would mean i'd lose out on the Horsemen though.
~ Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee ~
I'm with Commissar. Stay away from Warriors and Knights as they're utterly chaos and you want to stay away from that and keep to the Marauder/Tribe/Wode theme.
For those sorts of points I'd look at 2-3 big blocks of Marauders armed with great weapons and a Mark of your choice. Then back them up with Chariots, horsemen and maybe a shrine or two. Then grab the mandatory Sorcerer and BSB.
Then the rest is up to you!!
The Boar Boy pigs are HUGE and wide. I doubt the Horsemen legs will fit them without the aid of a file/saw, some Green stuff and them looking like their hips have broken.
Best value for a good start would probably be:
2x Bat boxes - 20 marauders is more than you'll get in a single kit, and while the hounds aren't too thrilling, they're a good addition (or you can always pawn them off)
2x Marauder Boxes - for another 32 rauders. Brings your tally to 72. 100 would be ideal (two regs of fifty) but we don't want to blow your wallet too quickly.
1x Caster lord of your choice
1x sprue of Warrior Halberds
This would give you a pretty solid starter. You'd have 23 Warriors/Chosen as your anvil, use the 24th man to convert a BSB for the army. You'll have 10 knight lances to make halberds, plus 10 more from the sprue- the extra 3 guys are regimental command.
You'll have 2 units of 5 knights (or a bus of ten) to do your flanking and hunting. The hounds, if you keep them, fill your redirection and tactical roles, you have enough models for 4 minimum sized regiments.
The Marauders get greatweapons (converted by mounting the axeheads from the kit onto the tops of the flail shafts) and are split into 2 units of 36 each, 6x6. You'll be looking to up these to units of 50, 10x5. Limit your commands to a standard and musician at most.
Finally- I understand everyone saying to stick to Marauders and avoid armored models for the sake of fluff and keeping the Pict/Woad theme, but two things to remember-
1. This is Fantasy, and even realistically the Celts were the first to invent ringmail- it makes sense to have a core of heavy armored elites to represent the best warriors of the tribe.
2. All Marauder gets expensive, because Marauders are so cheap. A $35 box of Marauders gets you around 80-100pts. A $35 box of Warriors is at least 130pts, and can easily get up to almost 300. Similarly, a $22 box of Horsemen is about 75-100pts, whereas a $22 box of Knights starts at 200pts and only goes up from there. Do the math, and you realize that not only are you building/painting/converting more models, you're also spending more money. You can still have an army with more "unarmored" models than Warriors, without forcing yourself down the 'no-plate' route.
Thanks for the replies guys!
Yeah I know the Knights and Warriors are a little too beefy and armoured for the theme, I was thinking about painting the armour as if it were leather with chainmail/ringmail underneath, just to give me something that hits a little harder than the Marauders.
But if you don't think this is a great idea I can drop them ?
( Also what Captain mentioned, Elite troops with some type of armour just for ''oh crap moments'' would be helpful)
True with the Battalions giving uhm 4 more models than a box, but they're also almost triple the price (here at least), I do have a website that has the Marauder boxes for cheaper than the official GW website, for example I can get 5 boxes of Marauders (80 models) for the same price as 4 boxes on the GW website.
Yeah I was thinking the Boar Boyz boars were a little too big, then I saw the Savage Boar Boys and they looked a little thinner toward the top, was wondering if anyone had tried / had the models to compare, shame as I really don't like the Chaos horses!
With that being said I have written up so far
5 x Marauder boxes. (80 Marauders) - about 31$ a box at the cheaper store, 41$ or so at GW ( using currency conversions here ).
2 x Marauder Horsemen (10 Horsemen) - about 26$ a box, GW 29$
1(or 2) x WoC (12 warriors, to hang back for protection of her archers) - about 39$ a box, GW 41$
1 x Giant - Someone mentioned in my other thread these are pretty much a must for monster killing and what not ? - about 51$, GW 58$
1 x Caster - Wood Elf Male Spell Singer with staff (Druidy) - Same at both
1 x Lord ( Wood Elf lord on stag / Mounted Wood Elf Lord *the armoured one* ) - Are mounted Lords worth it or should I look for a model that is on foot ? - same at both
1 x BSB (Havn't decided on a model yet) - same at both
and I did have 2 x Savage Orc Boar Boyz for the mounts, but I guess i'm scratching that off the list! (same price as the horsemen) - I must say I am still tempted to try this out as I think Boars would look pretty cool (maybe if I file down the top of the boars make it thinner where they would sit, as it would be covered up anyways? )
Or what ab out the Space Wolves Fenrisian Wolf Pack they seem to be on a smaller scale, some awkward poses there though.
So at GW i'm looking at around 434$ - 460$
And at the other place it's going to be pretty much the same price but with an extra box or two (I think) havn't done the math for that one yet.
I could go for 2 battalions 117$ per box at GW and 105$ at the 'cheaper' store.
No one ever said it was cheap starting out eh! 0)

Another option is a hellcannon. S10 under the hole is good for wounding monsters, and then any wounds it causes does d6 wounds. It also has the benefit of being an anvil in close combat. That's not to say that it isn't without its faults. You still have to roll a hit to wound monsters, and anything that will make you take an initiative test will make you cry (but that's true for giants too). Overall I prefer the hellcannon because if I take it and my opponent doesn't have really high toughness monsters, it still has it's uses.
I'd try out the knights on board for you but I seem to only have the older boars. Painting the armour as leather sounds like a grey idea. Perhaps try marauder heads on the warriors or even a few space wolf ones if you can lay your hands on them. Might help keep them in theme whilst giving you a nice heavy unit to anchor your line.
I was tempted by some elves as slaaneshi devotees but I think they may turn out a little too dark elf. Looking forward too seeing what you come up with.
I did the math, you're saving about 25% on the regiments, and 10% on the Battalion boxes, so the expenses roughly even themselves out.
My suggestion, honestly, is to get the book first, take a look at it, post up some lists, and then buy your models. Don't rush in and buy $425 of models without knowing what you want to do with them. A bunch of models is great, but if you can't make a good list with them... you're sort of screwed.
For example, if I were to make a list with your models, I'd get something like this:
40 Marauders w/ Greatweapons, MoK, Standard, Musician
40 Marauders w/ Greatweapons, MoK, Standard, Musician
9 Marauder Horsemen w/ Mark of Khorne, Flails
22 Warriors w/ HW&Shield (unless you spend extra for Halberd sprues), MoT, Full Command
@ 392 (see what I mean about Warriors being cheaper? That one unit has twice as many points with a quarter of the models as your Marauders)
Giant w/ Mark of Slaanesh
L4 Sorcerer Lord w/ Infernal Puppet, Talisman of Preservation
Exalted BSB w/ Mark of Tzeentch, Shield, Book of Secrets
Exalted w/ Mark of Slaanesh, Steed of Slaanesh, Stream of Corruption, Halberd, Enchanted Shield
Total - 2000pts
The list is by no means perfect. The Giant, for example, is good against Monsters (especially with ASF from MoS, which is practically mandatory) but the only way it will survive against a regiment of multiple models is if he rolls up 'Yell and Bawl' in combat, otherwise they'll swarm over his unarmored body and rip him to bits. Your Marauder Horsemen are subbing in as Knights or flankers, joined by the Wood Elf on the Stag (Steed of Slaanesh). Since they're fast cavalry, their job is to charge into a single enemy unit early on and cut it to pieces. If they survive, the character splits from the unit and they both go off hunting warmachines and lone characters. The Marauder blocks are your point-and-click units, using their GWs to hopefully tear apart anything they come into contact with. Your Warriors are your anvil, and your bunker for the SorcLord and your BSB.
Fortunately, over 50% of the list is Core, so you have plenty of room to expand if you'd like. But do you see my point about buying your models? You wanted an army around 1250 to get started with, and this is almost twice that size (trust me, I can get this collection to 2500pts, you have enough Core to bump those Warriors to Chosen and start going crazy with upgrades etc, but 'stretching' weakens a list).
