I definitely want to start fielding Festus for his funky unit buffs, but there's the obvious drawback in his fragility and inability to refuse challenges.
What tactics, tips, tricks e.t.c are you guys using to keep him alive?
stick 2 exalted heros in a unit 5 wide with full command, then he sits in the second rank and you can use the exalteds to take challenges.
make one the bsb and one kitted to kill stuff. you get 5+ regen and poison from festus so those exalteds dont need a hwole lot to be pretty damn tough.
Depending on the unit he is in makes his survival vary...if he's with a unit of marauders, the unit champ isn't particularly robust enough to survive more than a single challenge leaving Festus very vulnerable to challenges in the following combats. Warriors are different however a single warrior unit champ has a 4+ armor save + the bonus of the 5+ regeneration making him a much more valuable body guard. Relying on the champions is the cheapest way I know to keep Festus out of combat, you could go the more expensive route as HellcannonsRcool has suggested and surround him with tough exalted..I prefer to keep it cheap and simple myself, but both work fine.
Something else you can do, is if your running a lord lvl tzeentch caster or a lvl 2 tzeentch caster and you manage to get call to glory, you can give Festus' unit an exalted to help battle against your opponents tough characters/champions.
~shrug~ if things get dicey for festus, you're one shadow spell away from swopping in a model with chaos armor and, perhaps, an overall +2 save...

Agreed, shadow cantrip is probably the best, although it removes his unit buff, so there is that.

I personally do not reccomend the idea of stuffing any mage into the back rank. I was experimenting with this and the results of miscasting are pretty terrible.
the puppet will not save u either, when you are smack in the midle like that every result is bad
Reform the unit as wide as possible and put him in a corner out of combat, making sure that the unit has a champ to absorb the challenge.
