Welcome to Librarium Online!
So after a fair amount of thought and some discussion in the army list forum (see my thread here (3,000 Points: The Einhandjir Horde Mk.1.1)), I have been persuaded to remove the Knights from my army.
This has left a canker in my spirit, however. The Storm of Swords - although one of the cheaper and less well-equipped units in my army - was conceptually one of my favourite units.
So, having thought about it, I decided that the nobility of the North, the dreaded Storm of Swords, will receive their own fully-fleshed army list.
This thread is a stepping-stone to achieving that dream: an all-cavalry army list (which can include units such as Dragon Ogres or Trolls, since they have sufficient movement to keep pace) centred around the infamous Chaos Knights.
So, to start: is this possible? To continue: how would you do it? What kind of points-size is most viable for a Knights army? Would you run MSU or look at larger, horde-busting units of Knights? The nobility of the North requires some colourful characters: how many Exalted Heroes can we reasonably fit into a list before things get silly? Are Marauder Horsemen really all that bad?
I want this thread to discuss all aspects of building a Chaos Knights army. I'm looking for you to help: you, my battle brothers, my family of fur-and-steel-clad fury. Heed the call and feel the power of the Gods of Chaos course through your veins. Today, we feast and talk and exult in the glory of the Gods - tomorrow, we ride!!
I'm subbed to this!
I've got a lot of cavalry and a heck of a lot of hounds and like you there's something loin stirring about seeing an all cavalry army fielded - somehow it just seems right.
In the little I've played with 8th. ed M.Horsemen went up in my estimation, and I have often wondered if it would be worth using them in a light armour capacity (going against convention). I felt that the vanguard move was
One thing that does puzzle me though is that I had thought 8th ed to be the edition which favoured the horde so the whole concept of multiple small units never really crossed my mind. Could we not run hounds or marauder horse as a horde or large block to essentially replace our marauder great weapon blocks?
I look to running an all cav army one day, as I love chaos knights both for the models and the in game effects.
Ideally I'd run a big unit with a chaos lord in, for maximum impact, although most people have advised me against it.
I reckon an all cavalry army could work well against certain lists and opponents, but I would take at least 10 infantry in case I played the watch tower scenario (sure trolls would work, but from experience I've found warriors to be better).

I've used a lis with 2khorne knight units and a nurgle lord BSB bus and they themselves did quite well. The one thing I found is that they really need infantry back-up or they get in trouble if you find your self in a pinsh. I tried it with 2x30 tzeetch S&B merauders but they fell short in holding up units. Now you could throw in the Troll king+L4mage and use trolls as core, thats my next try.
Good to know I'm not the only one wanting to try this.
My thoughts on the idea, in no particular order, are something like this:
I want to make this list for fluff reasons, rather than for competitive play. I think the main component quite clearly has to be Chaos Knights. I particularly want to use a Chaos Lord for this list - it's a list of martial Knights led by a fearsome warrior. I like the idea of using Trolls as Core, but you end up getting carried away on character costs - having a Chaos Lord, Battle Standard Bearer and level 2 Sorcerer, you haven't got space left for Throgg at 2,000 points. I think Marauder Horsemen are probably not quite as rubbish as people say they are, though I appreciate it depends on how you use them. I don't think the Blasted Standard is necessary in a list like this, since units will be in combat so quickly; that opens up space for the Banner of Rage. Warhounds are even more important for cover saves. I think that losing Fast Cavalry on some Marauder Horsemen to give them Light Armour and Shields for the 4+ save makes sense.
I spent most of this afternoon putting together a list that incorporates as many of these ideas as possible. I'm going to write it up in the Army Lists forum just now. Will put a link here shortly.
I, too, was looking forward in creating an all cavalry list .
I started a thread elsewhere, and received good advice on why these lists don't work in 8 th ...
Thanks for the link. I'm aware of the reasons why all-cavalry is tricky, but I refuse to believe it's dead. Ironically, I rather suspect that Warriors of Chaos is possibly the toughest match-up for an all-cavalry army, but I seriously think that it's possible.
With careful deployment and well-thought out movement, I think we can win games with an all-cavalry list. And, if the worst comes to the worst, we can kill a unit and run away from the slower infantry hordes. Not very Chaos, perhaps, but then I would say that being not-very-Chaos as a Chaos player is definitively Chaos. It's an odd paradox.
