Close Combat Only
Shooting Only (unless mobs come to it)
Combination of the two!
How often do you guys shoot your hellcannons? Ever?
Everytime I misfire with them! I must have really back luck! But the misfire chart on those things seems a lot more mean than the misfire chart on other warmachines...
Anyway, so close combat for the cannon only, or a combination, or shooting? Vote please!
I've used it just for shooting in about 4 games and it did nothing or misfired. I feel that it's just too unreliable as a shooting piece for me. With its combat stats and being unbreakable, I don't see why you want to use it for shooting.
I actually do primarily use mine for shooting. Don't get me wrong, I fully recognize that they are awesome in combat, but Ouse them to anchor my flanks, and use the shooting to encourage my enemy to engage me in combat. And yes, while they are kinda inaccurate, damn what a shot! Because I so often run a lvl 4 death, the threat of Doom and Darkness combined with there'll cannon helps force people town gage me in combat, which is exactly where I want them.
So while I am not hesitant to run them into combat (generally to keep my line units from being flanked) I mostly shoot with them
I don't use one. With a block of GW marauders, a BSB bus of Tz Warriors, a squadron of knights, and six trolls plus Throgg, it's just 'push stuff forward and when something breaks through, it turns and flanks the enemy to the left or right of it. Seriously, four units, a BSB, and a sorceror, that's all you need!

Hmm nice replies! I'm going to make a list with two of them. I haven't decided yet if I will still shoot with them or not. Maybe coupled with that Shadow mage (doom and darkness) that combo will be worth the time! I'll see how it goes!
Thanks for the replies!
Doom and Darkness is from Lore of Death, not Shadows. In general, though, you shoot them if the opponent is vulnerable to Panic shenanigans - otherwise, run 'em in there.

Yeah duh, just typed it wrong. I swear I knew that! Typed a list with 2 cannons, but no death mages unfortunately. Still, I'll see how they do. Probably won't do much shooting with them.
The Death-mage tactic can be fun, but even then I feel that it's a waste. I like our cannons to get up close and personal. I voted "close combat only" because I don't think that a combination of the two is really the way to view my strategy. I usually use my Cannon to shoot in the later turns of the game, if it's unengaged - just to pound targets that I might not be able to run over to anyways, and only in hopes that they break and flee from a nearby board edge. If there are too many models in the unit and/or I don't think that they'll run off the table anyways, I save the shot rather than risking the miscast.
Worst moment by far was in a tournament when I rolled for every caster to automatically miscast. My BSB and Festus were on opposite corners of the same unit, the BSB with the Book of Secrets. Needless to say, with 1D6+1 he blew himself up catastrophically, despite using the Puppet to try and save him. Festus also blew up, but not quite the "hole in the warp" scenario, and I was left with 1/3 of my main hammer unit. They legged it into cover and stayed put for VP-denial for the rest of the game. My general also exploded and stripped a nice chunk off of my unit, as well as sucking himself into the warp. The only casters to survive unscathed were my opponent's Slann (throne of vines, ignored his miscast on a 2+) and his Skink (rolled a 1 to wound him).
Holy smokes. Yeah that beats out any bad luck Ive ever had with the damn things lol.
The list I just wrote with 2 cannons (in the list section of this forum) I don't have a puppet. So if I miscasted like you did Captain, I have a much greater chance of that happening to me. I guess I'll just use them as flankers! Gees thats terrible man lol
