Aye, it's why I take 30 warhounds at 3k (with my MArauder list). They're awesome to block off charges and annoy the hell out of an opponent. Really helps against my mates black orc unit of death. We're taking a 7x7 unit of Black orcs with Grimgor........ it's a horrid unit to face.

We do have the disc riding lord with a 3+ wardsave and crown of command as another deathstar fighting option - he will be in a challenge each round so is going to be relatively safe from harm and since he can get there quite quickly he can intercept the unit before it has chance to start really chewing stuff up.

While I accept in principle what you're saying, vampire lords are far superior to chaos lords in a scrap. He will get his ass handed to him by any semi-decent vampire. Bloodline powers > Chaos gifts
If he invests the points on the talisman of protection, a charmed shield and the crown of command, the best he can do to dish out damage in return is a halberd. Can't go the route of a great weapon as all my lists are take all comers.

Personally I like the thought of diverting with chaff, as long as there's enough room. That's why my dogs and marauder horsemen are there for after all.

I dont see why a character with a 2+/3+ save is ever going to get his ass handed to him - even against some of the horrendous new vampire lords he should be able to last several rounds of combat in a challenge, long enough for some warriors to crash in on the flank of this unit and start raising hell (especially while the guy who could have hurt them badly is locked in a challenge). But, yes, small units of warhounds can also accomplish this diversionary tactic at a lesser cost.

I jsut glanced at the Vampire rulebook, and I didn't see anything in the blood lines that would make a Chaos Lord drop...

The only good combat ones were ASF, and extra wound and +2 WS. He'll have slightly better WS and get to attack first and re roll misses (just noticed the power that makes a challenger re roll to hit on a failed -3 test... this may hurt but still.. armour of damnation does this same thing w/o the test). But a Lord packing a +2/+3 can win that battle... maybe I'm missing something?

Smack that lord once with a Glaive of Putrefaction.....
