Just started WHFB, chose WOC as my first army. What now?

    Hey guys!

As the title says, I started WHFB today, and after choosing WOC over the Empire I bought the army book (if thats what they're called) and I have skimmed through it. I have already got a bit of experience after being through a small Island of Blood tutorial at my local GW, which was fairly easy to follow because of the rule similarities between 40k and Fantasy. Truth be told, I am not sure where to start. I have two thoughts running through my head, the first is Khorne, and the second is masses of hard warriors and monsters crashing with the enemy in gruelling Medieval bloodbath style. I like the idea of a powerful centerpiece Lord/Hero, possibly with a powerful mount. I don't know what the basic army building guidelines of WHFB are (although I understand the restrictions/rules) and I would be thankful if anyone could help me by telling me what a good WOC army should have. Again, thanks in advance.

Edit: Damnit sorry I did not notice the beginners questions thread.

Hi and welcome to WHFB. My general suggestions would be as follows: first you'll want to get the Battle Rule Book if you don't already have one, second you'll probably want to check out this thread http://www.librarium-online.com/foru...art-guide.html (Warriors Quickstart Guide) its a great starting point.

Well, you've found the "beginner's questions" thread, so a glance through that might help, or a glance through THIS (WoC Experiences in Battle) to see some of our units and ideas in action.

The most helpful will almost certainly be the Quickstart Guide that young mr. Cycrino linked you to. Otherwise, any of our Stickies are great jumping off points, as motivation to paint or convert, or to get information. Don't forget Borak's frequent painting-contests.
I am not offering any comments regarding the Banner of the World Dragon at this time. For my thoughts on the situation, please refer to the following scene from vintage film: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYiv76qRCkA

This thread here (Warriors Quickstart Guide) is a fantastic place to start. I know it's long, but everything that is in there is there for a reason, so read all of it and go back to reference it until you have a working knowledge of it. The suggested army is VERY solid and actually almost exactly what I use competitively against my friends. That's not to say it's the ONLY way to play chaos because we can actually do it multiple ways, it just fits my playstyle well.

The only downside to the list is that 2250 is sort of a big point value to start at, I prefer to teach people at around 1000 points. If you'd like to try to get a few smaller games under your belt you can use any of those models to great success, so I still highly recommend coughing up the $261 US.

Make sure you buy the Big Rule Book (BRB ) as well as it's crucial to playing WHFB. You can either buy it as the big book or island of blood has a miniature version of it included in the start set. If you wanted to you could probably pick that one up off of ebay for cheaper than the hardcover book.

The last thing I'd suggest is after studying up from Captain's suggestions and giving both our army book and the BRB a good look over, make some army lists and post them in the army list sub thread so that people can give you constructive criticism. Once you find a list you like give it a try as no matter how much studying you do, nothing beats actual play experience.

Welcome to WoC, the boards, and the hobby as well

    So you like Khorne, eh?
Cool. I favour Tzeentch myself, but to each their own.
Break out the red and brass paints and go to town!

If I were to offer any advice it would be to follow the advice above, for it is sound.

If you like a theme then have a go at it. Remember that if you build up to 1000 points with a Khornate theme, then find that the lack of sorcerers is hurting you, then you have the opportunity to diversify and build in some variety, so if your first thousand points got you a regiment each of Warriors, Marauders, knights and a Hero on a juggernought, then your next 500 points could be a sorcerer and a hellcannon with a few more marauders for numbers in the original regiment, to add different elements. Build slow and don't buy too many miniatures at once, it will kill your enthusiasm for painting and modelling, as it becomes more of a chore than a pleasure.

Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women!

I also agree. I've been trying to get through painting 50 marauders for months now and that's just a fraction of my all grey themed army.

I found if you do them in groups of 10, it's a lot better.

I remember my marauders taking ages as well - longer then any other regiments of chaos. My trick was spray them all black, do the skin rotting flesh, the trousers whatever colour you want, the metal either brass or metal and then give the whole thing a brown wash (I used ogryn flesh but I am sure devlin mud would work ok -even that army painter dip would be nice) and that is all there is to it. You can highlight and add more effects later but for the time being it gets them looking acceptable and makes the batch process much easier to manage.
