Welcome to Librarium Online!
Newbie player, still trying to sort out what to use in my first army.
My Tzeentch army should be able to deal with magic and melee, but I need some help in the non-magical ranged combat department.
Furies: less than 30 points
Screamers: more than 30 points
Let's compare the two by spending 165 points:
11 Furies vs 5 Screamers
The Furies, being a larger unit, take up more room on the board, so are able to screen bigger units (right?). The Screamers however have both a higher Toughness and 2 wounds per model. The Furies are easier to hit, and each wound will remove a model. The Screamers are harder to hit, and they can take a wound and keep on truckin'. If you want to screen your valuable Chaos Knights, Screamers seem to be the way to go.
The Furies have the higher WS, so will be able to get more hits in. Their higher unit size also means that Fear is more effective. On the other hand, your unit will probably suffer at least one round of ranged combat, so chances are that before you reach the warmachines, you'll have suffered some wounds. The Toughness of the Screamers combined with their 2 wounds might allow the entire unit to reach the warmachine intact, even after being fired upon by archers. The Furies however, with their lower Toughness and 1 wound, might be reduced by a few models. The unit size would most likely still be higher than that of the Screamers, so Fear would still be more effective, but they now might have fewer attacks than the Screamers, which could offset their higher WS.
Figuring that the Screamers cost twice what Furies cost because they have two attacks and two wounds, the extra 3 points buys you the Slashing attack.
Any other issues that I should consider?
You can have no more than one unit of each in your army. Min size for Furies is 5, at cost of 75 points. Min size of Screamers is 3, at cost of 99 points.
Well i might not have this right but ill try anyways.
Dont u get to have a unit of furies for every characters you have who is marked undivided.
If this is true, which i believe it is then this disicion should depend on your army. Are you playing a all Demon Tzeentch Army or do u plan on having undivided characters in there. If U going Demon Tzeentch your left with the screamers. If you have undizided in there, well it up to your preference.
Personally Id pick screamers, unless you where going to convert the furies to make them look more Tzeentch.
This is why- If your getting shot at, numbers dont matter as much to deamons. They dont run when 1/4 there troops are taken down. There for having more furies isnt a benefit. 2nd, 11 furies compared to 5 screamers is a wound difference of 1. 3rd, who do u think has a better chance of surving a hail of arrows or such, Id say the screamers with there higher Tgh.
Hope that helps, and isnt just a serving of weak sauce. Later.
-Just because your paranoid, dosn't meen there not after you.
No. They are stricktly 0-1, as are the Screamers.Dont u get to have a unit of furies for every characters you have who is marked undivided.
I would aslo pick Screamers, since your army is Tzeentch oriented.
I agree with the above, Screamers as your list is Tzeentch, and also the slashing attack makes them more versitile.
I voted screamers cause i do genuinely believe them to be better, however both is an interesting option: two units of flyers, and as stated above, each have slightly different uses
I think the general assumption though should be that we're working strictly from the HoC book, mostly because a large number of tournaments don't allow SoC, and the Daemonic Legions armies are constructed and play a lot differently than the HoC lists. Thus both are 0-1 choices, but I can't see finding the points to have units of both in the same list.
But as to the question of which is better, I can't think of a reason not to play Screamers if you have anything else Tzeentchian in your army, but I can think of lots of lists where I couldn't spend points on Furies; you really have to buy at least 7 or 8 of them to be effective. And for that many points, I'd much rather scrounge up the last few points to get a unit of 4 Screamers instead. IMO optimal size for the Screamer unit is between 4 and 6, depending on how many missile weapons your opponent has, but for a tournament list, I'd have to waffle and take 5, assuming I had the points.
Screamers are better all around. An extra wound, toughness, and toughness. The slashing attack is nice as well.
I've been a Tzeentch player since Hordes first came out and I have to say Screamers win hands down. Used right they can be the bane of any army that uses war machines or small units. The two wounds, daemonic save, 20' flying movement and fear causing makes them hard to handle. Of course, if they divert magic or units to deal solely with them, thats one less thing your heavier units have to deal with (knights, warriors, etc) and they generally hold up for a couple of turns under that pressure.
Two of the players that I play (one plays High Elves, the other plays Dwarves and Empire), have basically declared their undying hatred for these guys. That alone makes them the first choice in my army.
Well, i heard that chaos furies are good to put in front of your other units to absorb all the fire. That way, the enemy has to kill all the furies before they can shoot your core units.
