I've been looking at Hellcannons recently and been trying to work them into my army list. However, are they really worth it at 275 points? I mean, I know I get precious ranged attacks with a Hellcannon, but im sacrificing 2 Rare Slots in a 2000pts list, that means no spawn! Also, 275 points is enough for a unit of 5 Undevided Chosen Knights with full command. Finally, when my army gets into close combat with the enemy, the effectiveness of my cannon will be severely limited (i don't want to hit my own troops!. So have any of you Chaos Veterans that have used Hellcannons got any useful feedback on them?
Thanks in advance,
Edit: Oops, 270pts, not 275!
Ive recently have been messing around with hellcannons and have found them pretty good. Spawn arnt really worth taking as it is (i suggest a shagggoth though) and your units usually arnt in danger. Not only is it good at shooting but it is also a beast in close combat. If your facing a shooty army i suggest going for the cannon, if your facing heavy armor (knights) go for the shaggoth. Just get both and switch them depending on your opponent (which isnt legal in a tourny). But as my friend says, playtest anything to find its worth. Well good luck.

Hellcannons are great against Dwarf type armies where they hunker down and blast away.
With the hellcannon you can neutralise some threats quite easily if the template lands right. Also firing it into the middle of a battle line against things like skaven and Empire where Ld isn't too great can mean you don't even need to fight them, their too busy running.
Against cav heavy armies, its str 10 no save.....any questions? Also if you get the cav to run your golden, they may pursue 3D6 but they run just as fast.
However as you said once combat hits, which hopefully it does, the hellcannon becomes a risk. but until then it can easily make its points back a drop a big spanner in the works for the enemy.
And about the 2 rare slot problem....I rarely use spawn, they are too unpredictable for my tastes. And I'm not going to use 2 Giants or a shagggoth and a Giant or even 2 rares at any time. They are too expensive for a Chaos army where we are usually outnumbered anyway.
So Hellcannons are great, best artillery in the game and adding to Chaos' bad reputation (Y)
However if you are looking for alternatives, Shaggoths and Giants are the way to go, gotta love watching a big beastie trambling a unit! :shifty:

Wow. Well, it sounds like you lot are all for the hellcannon, so i've decided to drop my spawn and go for a Hellcannon instead. I mean, you can't argue with D6 S10 hits, and it's such a cool mode. However, im still having a little trouble working it into my army list. Without the Spawn i'm still 40 points down. Any ideas?
Thanks for your replies, with a little tweaking, I think my Chaos Army will become a force to be reckoned with!
