Welcome to Librarium Online!
Playing against Ogre Kingdoms is causing me some trouble. From what I've seen, most armies can rely on getting some good shooting into the bulk of the oncoming horde, and causing panic checks on the pitiful Ogre armor and leadership. Apart from that, it seems the best way to get combat resolution over Ogres is outnumbering and rank bonuses. Both of these aspects are kind of weak in the chaos armory.
So our shooting is almost negligable, and the only shooty troops I currently have is 5 horsemen with axes. Not exactly something that frightens my opponent into hiding his dangerous troops. So in most games it will be a clash between my chaos horde, and the entire ogre army.
Secondly Ogres are fast. Warriors will almost never get a charge off. While this is true against many armies, it's a little more frightening when Ogres are hitting you. Four bulls charging a unit of warriors should statistically kill exactly 3 warriors. (assuming simply armed with ogre clubs, against warriors with a HW/shield). Now assuming a frontage of 4, we have one guy capable of hitting back, and he'll inflict a wound 1/3 of the time. With squad size, and rank bonuses, this evens out combat resolution.
However things get a little more dificult where Ogre characters are involved. The thundermace is a beast, and chews warriors up like none other.
I'm playing a Slaanesh army, and so I don't have to worry about the fear causing aspects of the Ogres, but in return I have nothing like Frenzy, (which has fewer downsides against ogres) to give an edge in combat.
I played a game against Ogres recently, and did rather poorly. I thought I had stuff under control, and most of the combats were carefully set up with the oh-so-godly Slaaneshi magic. However once combat started, the bad kind of chaos ensued. My marauders caused more problems than they did damage, and were basically broken on the turns they landed a flank charge. The Tyrant and his thundermace made a horrid mockery of my lord, knocking the poor guy out in 1 blow. I had limited success with casting luxurious torment on large bull units, and forcing them to charge horsemen, and then counter-charging with heavy warrior units, but overall I had a horrid time besting them, and in the end I was overrun.
So for all the experienced chaos players here, what types of tactics would you employ against the giant smurfs? (I don't mean that as a 40k refference, but the army I played against was actually painted like giant smurfs.)
The thundermace is a very gutsy item to use, as it will hit any of your caracters of a mere 4+. Use the armour of damnation and a gaze or crown of everlastibng conquest, and you should make a quick job on the mace.
Outnumbering, bring alot of marauders. They don't seem to excel Vs ogres, but they've got better Ws and initiavie than ogres, and come dirt cheap (if your opponent uses clubs overall, forgo the armour of sheild, and just bring a mass amount of them with flails or great weapons.
Use some furies to slow down is thundering horde with some decent march blocking, this should give you enough time to set up charge receptions.
Use chaos warhounds to either flee from is charge and set up a counter flank, or get cheap flankers to cause is ogres panic tests.
This is very odd for me to say, but in this case, Chosen Knights will be of great help to cleave throught those overgrown dwarfs ^_^
Thrust me, I know, I've been on the receiving end of these guys with my Ogre knigdoms army!
If you can't charge them, walk right up to them. Remember that the bull charge only works if they move more than their basic move, so use that to your advantage.
Add Slaanesh magic or Chosen Knights of Khorne to taste.
Having an army and not owning a rulebook is like owning a car with no steering wheel.Originally Posted by amishcellphone
Walking up to them is a good way to remove those impact hits, but it's an easy way to give out a flank charge to a fast moving army.Originally Posted by Rork
