Hello, I'm a seasoned 40k player and recently started fantasy with about 1500 pts of Lizzies. My friend plays khorne in 40k and has a Bloodthirster and 20 Bloodletters. I've been trying to convince him to play fantasy since he already seems to have a healthy start on a HOC list. However, I am completely clueless when it comes to any army but lizzies and was wondering if someone could give me a ballpark on how many points he has (with intelligent upgrades if any) and how many points he could have by spending as little cash as possible, and I mean as little as possible, like, less than 30 dollars, preferably less than 20. Yeah, he's cheap. But rightously so because over the last 6 months he's spent over a thousand dollars buying 2500 pts of Imperial Guard, Chaos and 13th Company Space Wolves, so he's sworn to not spend another dime until he's got them all painted. I might even buy him a blister or two just so he plays, because there's just me and one other person in our gaming group that play fantasy. Anyway, I'll spare you from my ranting any further, help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers. O, and I meant a list of 1k for him, with what he's got and maybe a US $10 blister or two. Thanks again.
That's quite a tight budget. The main problem, and this is a biggie, is that a Bloodthirster takes a lord choice, which you may know means that he can't field it under 2000 points. Some people might let him use it as an exalted daemon, but it's a push. If he does get away with this, a max Exalted Daemon (all upgrades) rounds off at 310 points. With 20 Bloodletters, he could have one unit of twenty, which would be a good unit, or two units of 10, which wouldn't be as tactically sound. He needs at least two core units, though, so if the Bloodletters are his only troops, then they have to be in two groups of ten, the minimum unit size. 2 X 10 bloodletters costs 320 points, I believe, with no command group, which he probably doesn't have. So, at best, he could manage 630 points with what he's got, and it wouldn't be a very well made army. For more models, I'd suggest more Bloodletters, and maybe a unit of Flesh hounds, to round of his army at 1000. However, Daemons tend to be, well, costly.
I'd like to make a note now that he's going to be forced into a Daemonic army, since he can't possibly build two core mortal units from scratch on that budget.
If he does go along and buy more daemons, going over budget, he could manage 1000. And I would advise doing this with the Daemonic Legions list instead of the Hordes of Chaos Daemons list. If he refuses the costly metal models, than a unit of warriors, at about max budget, would be best. This would mean standard daemons list (not as good but you can have mortals). He should make them chosen, mark of Khorne, and give them extra hand weapons if he really wants his points to be spent. 12 chosen can go at 321 pt plus up to 50 on a magic banner, which would get him to his 1000 milestone. But ideally, daemons or mortals is the way to go through and through, not fragmented between the two.
