Well, chaos is quite versatile (apart from non-magic shooting) so with that few basics an advice can't really be given.
Except: Marauder Horsemen and/or Chaos Furies! At least fielding one of those is nearly a must.
For anything else: There's the possibility of going cavalry-heavy (and with chaos it's very heavy )
Or you could go mage-heavy with lots of dice (thanks to tzeentch, and spicing it with undivided sorcerers makes your spellcasting even more diverse)
Not to forget the possibility of mixing your army mortal/demonic/beasts (personally I often field a gor herd to have a bit more mobile infantry, sometimes pimping them up with a wargor or a bray shaman)

And of course, the mix of chaos marks is also rather important (I mostly field an undivided/tzeentch mix, occasionally spiked up with slaanesh)

    agreed.

We of chaos have the largest variety of troop types available, counting specialists... It's important to remember to plan before you buy, and read the rules for Chaos generals carefully... I weep for those poor players who buy a Greater Daemon to lead their Mortals and grab a Shaggoth along the way only to find out that you can't field them in the same list!

What interests you in chaos? The hordes of mortal followers flooding their opponent's ranks? The elite warriors steadily marching like tanks across the battlefield? The legions of daemons? Ambushing beastmen?

the chaos warriors are a great start, but what is it that draws you to this list?

Seeing as you already have the basics of a Mortal Army, I would look at more core choices so that you have a legal list to use at 500 points and then build from there. You options then would be Marauder Infantry, Marauder Fast Cavalry, Chaos Knights, a Chariot and Warhounds. You can add Daemons, Beastmen and the Marks as you go, trying to give yourself some variety and tactical expertise.

Seeing as the Warriors and Champion would give you around 300 points, the Knights probably wouldn't fit into 500 points, so I would look at Marauder Infantry and a small unit of Warhounds. That would give you a solid base to build from.

Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of Chaos!

Well your playing hordes of chaos, so your doing very well so far. Just dont get mushy and play some good guys. Many people go tzeentch because of the powerful magic. Playing chaos your playing quality over quantity. Unless your fielding loads of marauders. Get chaos knights, there the number 1 unit killers. Even gamesworkshop says it. Get either 10 of them or somewhere around 5 and make them chosen. My list is undivided and its a work in progress. Im using crom, exalted champion, 75 chaos warriors, 9 knights and 10 warhounds. Yea talk about heavy infantry, I wanted a nice organized army, not some squabble of mindless orcs. They look organized and neat. It depends on your playing style what kind of army out want. Khorne if you hate magic and love combat, And choose any other ones if you like magic and such. personally i hate magic, it confuses the heck out of me.
Just good luck and congrats on choosing chaos.

    Great!
Similar in theme to my army...

"Morgathe thanks for the info im doing a tzeencth/undivided army so far its going preety well 25 choas warriors 5 knight chosen 1 lord of tzeentch and 1 exalted champoin undivided 16 maruders and a chariot "

Lord of Tzeentch - is he on a disc? or is he intended to go with a unit?
25 Chaos Warriors - yow! That's huge. As time goes on, you might want to expand this to 30... and split it into two units.
5 Chosen Knights - if at all possible, leave them undivided.
16 Marauders - a good start, but you probably want 20-25 to round out this unit
1 chariot - this is a great place to stach a mark of tzeentch. You need one anyway since you have a TZ character.

all in all, a good starter list. As a side note, if this is the ENTIRE extent of your army at this stage, you can label it as a Archaon's Horde list and get 30 free points! So long as you take to the field without any beasts or daemons, Archaon's Horde is always an option... and it can save you 30-90 points...

Archaon is an incredibly powerful model, but also very expensive points-wise. I wouldn't recommend using him in anything less than 4000 points personally (even then think carefully about it - he'd still be a quarter of your army!!). As for the daemon prince - also pricey and you would have to give him the master of mortals daemonic gift to lead a mortal army. On top of that, if you are playing 2000 points then you may only have one lord choice, so either the lord you've already got or a daemon prince. I would stick with the lord in a mortal army - very powerful and can be tooled up with some excellent magic items (especially if he's tzeentch).

Other than that, perhaps try bulking up that marauder unit to 20-25 models. Consider getting some furies, even just a small unit. Flyers are always handy against war machine crew, and it's vital to take them out early with chaos. Marauder horsemen can be helpful as flankers too. Finally, if you fancy it try putting in a couple of small units of warhounds. They are very cheap screens for your more expensive units, and if they survive the march towards the enemy line they can become useful flankers too.
    So Sayeth Jimmy boy
