If you are starting out, this is the thread to read. I am hereby asking all seasoned Hoardes of Chaos players to come forth with their thoughts on starting a Hoardes of Chaos army.
The purpose of this topic is to preven a swarm of "hi, im new to Hoardes of Chaos. Got any starter tips?" and "What units should I get?" type posts, and gather all such stuff riiiight in here.
So, new aspireing Hoardes of Chaos generals, feel free to ask questions about starting a Hoardes of Chaos army in this topic, and all Hoardes of Chaos generals who knows their army well, feel free to share your ideas on starting such a force with the new kids.
All other posts that i feel should belong in this topic, will be deleted.
Well, chaos are quite forward, they aren't that andvanced to play as other amys. The only really drawback is ranged combat, but they have almost everything else and they can take a quite alot beating before they go down.
They are just a mean lean close combat machine.
Well, as Slai did some magic I'll add some more stuff on my thoughts of chaos.
To start with you can choose 2 diffrent armys, the more popular choice the humans and the soo cool deamons.
I will write about the humans in this post.
The chaos lords and heroes are by far the most powerfull in the game. The combat ones are really deadly and has a good choice of magic item to boost them in close combat and make sure that they can survive any counter attacks.
The magicians are also really great, the only ones that can have armour which with their stats makes the really good, they can survive in close combat compared to other races magicians which would probably bite the dust in the same situation.
The core units. Well lets start with the normal chaos warrior, probably the best infantry in the game, though they are a little in flexible.
The knights, aren't any regiment that his as hard as the chaos knights, they are fast and hits hard, even in small numbers they are great.
Chariots is like any other chariot but with an extra edge thanks to the two chaos warrior on it.
Marauders, well this is the chaos cannon fodders, even though they aren't that cheap they are very cheap compared to the chaos warrior. They also has some more flexiblilty than the chaos warrior.
Maraudere horesmen, I would say never leave home without them, but I would say that about any fast cavalary. They have alot of weapon choices and works great for taking out lone mages, warmachines and stoping march moves.
Well the deamons are special for humans, if I do a post about them I will explain them better in that one.
As a rear choice they have the spawn, its great in combat but a bit random and can quite easily get behind the rest of the army.
I was happy to see this topic.
I've been playing and collecting Empire for a couple years now and haven't (until recently) been tempted by any other list.
Since converting about a dozen marauders for use as Flagellents I enjoyed the models and started looking at other Chaos models.
I'd hate to jump on the Chaos bandwagon just 'cause, but want to know more about them. (Anything with better stats seems better than Empire right now <grin>)
Can competitive lists be put together using mostly Marauders and Horsemen and minimize the use of the Warriors? I envy the Warrior statline but the models seem so plain and generic.
Also, it seems, due to their cost (especially with all the bells and whistles like Chosen etc.) that small units of 5 Knights are used. Do many lists use larger amounts of Knights like the 10 or 12 knight blocks commonly taken by Empire or Bret generals?
Personally I'd like to avoid the use Daemons in an army. A guy at my local shop suggested that I'd need some more hard hitting units like Ogres or Trolls from the Beast list? Your thoughts?
I haven't tried to research this on my own yet, but what restrictions are there for mixing between the Hordes and Beasts Chaos books?
I look forward to reading your replies...
PS: Obviously as an Empire player I'm used to a healthy shooty element in my army, how does Chaos survive other than just soaking up fire while racing across the board into HtH?

Jon, I haven't seen many large blocks of Knights, since, as you pointed out, they are incredibly expensive.
However, having an army of mostly marauders and marauder horsemen isn't a bad idea at all. I have had quite good luck with marauders with great weapons. Sure, they lack the armor protection from the shield, but I don't give em armor anyways.
Warriors are kind of generic looking, the new ones are MUCH less dynamic, but cool. On the other hand, they can pack a wallop and make your foe think twice about taking them on in hand to hand.
I have never used trolls, but I saw an ork player use them and due to the stupidity rule, they never even made it half way across the board. Orks, on the other hand, don't have as high of leadership as a Chaos Lord would, so it might be fun to give em a go. If you are looking for some awesome hitting power, look at Minotaurs. They can add some serious punch to your force, and if they are marked they can REALLY do some damage.
Demons can be good, but I have not had much luck when facing stability tests. I still use them, but never count on them.
Now, I have a question for others more senior than myself in the ways of Chaos. Does anyone have good tips for fighting skaven? I get ground up against them, and just recently was massacred by a skaven horde with that damn bell. Ideas here would be fantastic....

im thinking of starting a chaos slaanesh army and i dont know what to do
i want a daemon army
"innocence proves nothing"
I adopted a cute lil' dragon fetus
from Fetusmart! Hooray fetus! </a>
i also want to start a chaos army, maybe slaanesh... but the thing about chaos is that they have very little range (only the hell cannon)... so i'm still thinking either chaos or dark elves...
how ironic, as i too am torn btween the dark elves and chaos with slaanesh. i want a mortal army if i go chaos, how would it ork if mauraders werent included? or are they essential?
thanks, the lictor

It won't - Defeat me
We will - Will break you
We will - Defeat you
Personally I think Demon armies are the way to go.
Im in the middle of making a slaanesh army. LEt me tell you there very fast, there magic is the best out there(if you know how to use if with the super fastness) and they definatly know how to work the HTH combat.
If you want a Deamonic Legions army use the SoC list, better wardsaves and leaders ship, more and better mounted units, and chariots!
If you cant dicide between Dark Elves and Slaanesh go Cult of Slaanesh. U get alot of the good ness from both world. I was thinking of making a calvary army out of the Cult. As u can take choas knights, mounted deamonettes, and cold one riders as well as use there awsome slaanesh lore to set up charges and confuse your hopeless openents as you crackle in delight and evny at there pain wracked bodies.
-Just because your paranoid, dosn't meen there not after you.
About starting a Hordes of Chaos army:
what should be the minimum size of a regiment of Chaos Warriors?
There are only 12 in the box, but even when ranking them up 4x3
they 'only' have a unit strength of 12 (not including rank and banner bonusses).
Ok, they are rock hard, but also expensive.
Innovation suffuses this hobby like a tea bag in the boiling water of play.
How many there are in a box doesn't define how many you should field in a unit. I field normal warriors in regiments of 16 or 20, chosen mostly 16 with a frontage of 6. Those are my khornite warriors.
asquabbling they squandered and gambled
