First off - haven't played since 5th edt. so my skills might be somewhat rusty, so go easy on me if I completely fail to see some obvious point. But then again, I don't really assume that this is a hostile forum.
Secondly - I'm getting back in there and some how I've landed myself in a 2500 pts. battle against VC. How to defeat them?
I need all the help I can get.
I stole an armylist off of some archive here on librarium, and it looks something like this:
Spellweaver - 315
Wand of Wych
Branchwraith - 165
Magic level 1
Cluster of Radiants
Pageant of Strikes
Spellsinger - 140
Noble (gen) - 181
Helm of the Hunt
Hail of Doom Arrow
3x10 Glade Guard - 360
6 Glade Riders - 153
3x8 Dryads - 288
3 Warhawk Riders - 120
6 Wild Riders - 217
2x7 Wardancers - 266
Great Eagle - 50
10 Waywathchers - 240
I don't know if I need to put my spell casters in a regiment or anything or if this army is even worth fielding against VC. All comments are wellcome.
id say that is a near perfect list for against VC. You are taking 3 casters to shut down his magic phase with 7 dispel dice (that you can reroll), and 3 Dispel scrolls.
My best advice is to hide all of these casters until some of his vampires have died, then you can bring them out to cast, he will dispel everything you try to cast early in the game.
Save all dispels for his Dance Macabre spell <i.e. his double charge movement>.
dont worry, you can let him summon zombies once <just dont let him stack them up> let him put a few down, then murder them for free victory points!
30 Glade Guard + Hail of doom, will kill almost anything he has if you position your troops well, try to make the 3 unit of GG cover each other in an arc that faces towars your prime targets <go for slow movers>. - when you fire arrows, fire every arrow you have until that unit is dead, then it cant be regenerated. Take out gouls early, they will cause damage to you if they get there.
Dryads + Wardancers are the perfect mele troops for aginst VC, since you never know where zombies will apear, you need the skermish ability that they have to respond.
I wouldnt bother with 10 waywatchers, unless you think he will have Blood Knights - I would swap Eagle+Waywatchers for a treeman, this gives you something to tank any Graveguard units <His high unit str is immune to their killing blow>
Drop one Glade Rider mayb. Try to get one or two units of scouts, to march block.
Overall, this is a solid army, just protect all your casters, murder his weaker units early, then position your mele troops.
- Wood Elves + Orcs & Goblins since 2009 -
id say turn your Noble into an alter to save some points.
drop the Way watchers and 1 GR and try to squeeze in a treeman if you can.
other than that good luck!
Thanks a lot for the replyes
I just want to get every thing clear. Hope you don't mind
First off: When trying to hide my spellweaver and spell singer, I'm guessing you mean hiding them in the GG? They are going to (hopefully) have some distance to the fights. My branchwraith will have to merge with some dryads. Should I then keep them back a bit?
Secondly: Placing my GG so they cover each other - I'm taking that to mean, that if one of the get charged the other ones should be in position to attack flanks or rear?
Third: I've look at the army, and I can allmost swap the waywatchers + GE + 1 GR for 1 treeman and 5 scouts but I'm one point short. Other than that the armys the same. Can you see some way for me to cut that one point based on the previous army list.
I guess one way would be to make my noble an alter. If I do that I'm going to have to make my spellweaver my generel. Is he strong enough for that, I mean will he be to easy a kill?
Fourth and (for now) last: When rolling for getting spells. Should I make sure that every one gets tree singing or should I go for something else?
Thanks again - just really wants to get one in the first fight
Here's something I wrote about playing VC. Hopefully, it'll help you. Good luck, let us know how it goes.
The only thing that worry me is the noble alter. Once I've paid for the kind there's practicaly nothing left for outfitting him. Removed the musican on both wardancer units and given him great weapon and light armor. I got 38 points left. Can't decide weather or not to give him AoN or some magic weapon combo instead
I almost always run an alter, but I also really like an eagle-riding general. You can bounce him around wherever his better leadership is needed, and against VC, you're going to need it. And it's easier to keep him alive. Just avoid any combat where you can't win right away, which against VC means most of them. It's points denial. And having another marchblocking flyer is always good.
The best thing to give him without a doubt would be hail of doom arrow. It's one of the most useful magic items in the game. That will probably leave you enough points left to put one musician on the wardancers.
