Welcome to Librarium Online!
I currently have about 1k of Wood Elves and I'm trying to decide what I want to get to make my 2k army list. So far I've done well in 500-1000 points games playing all kinds of lists and I haven't really got any particular play style that I prefer.
However, I'm really keen to use certain hero models and would like to build around that, the models are a Noble/SpellW on an Eagle and SpellS/W on a Unicorn. I know the unicorn is not very popular gameplay-wise but I really want one.
This is the list I've come up with (got a bit carried away with the eagles...), I'd appreciate your thoughts on its weaknesses:
Spellweaver L3 (General)
+ Great Eagle
+ Wand of Wych Elm (re-roll dispel)
+ Glamourweave (4+ shooting ward, enemy rolls Ld for CC)
+ Great Eagle
+ Helm of the Hunt (6+ AS. +1 WS, +1 Attack on charge)
+ Hail of Doom Arrow (3D6 S4 magical arrows)
+ Glamourweave kindred
+ Dispel Scroll x2
+ Cluster (+1 dispel dice)
+ Annoynace (enemy hits on 6s in challenge)
10 x Glade Guard
10 x Glade Guard
5 x Glade Riders + Musician
8 x Dryads + Branch Nymph (Branchwraith here)
8 x Dryads
7 x Wardancers + Musician
6 x Wild Riders + FC + War Banner
6 x Wild Riders + Musician
Total: 2000 points
7PD, 7DD, 67 Models
My main questions are:
Any other advice is also welcome, thank you :-)
- I seem to have spent nearly 40% of my points on characters, is that too much? It sounds it...
- Do I really need 7DD or should I drop something (see question 1 too)? I should mention I play against VC and DE lists fairly often but only played at 1k so far and 4DD has got me through well enough so far.
- Should I drop something in favour of Tree Kin or a Treeman (I prefer Treekin unless it's a TMA but I seem to be in the minority)?
- Do I put the unicorn in with the Wild Riders w/ FC or is this too dangerous?

First of all, there is no use for a standard alter noble on an eagle. Just field the standard alter noble, and use the points for that eagle for something else! I would also drop the eagle for the lvl3(??) spellweaver and just stick the spellsinger in the woods or something. But then again I would completely drop that spellweaver... the magic we can conjure isnt the best out there. And when playing a 2k game you are going to face a lot tougher than a lvl3 spellweaver. So either make it a lvl4 spellweaver and up the spellsinger to lvl2, or just field 2x spellsinger lvl1 scroll caddy's.
That might sound a bit blunt, but trust me, a lvl3 and two lvl1 casters just isn't going to cut it. You can go all out on magic, but then do so! field a lvl4 and two lvl2 casters! then you have some magic to talk about.
The spellsinger on the unicorn should indeed join a unit, otherwise it will be shot to pieces before you can cast your first spell. So yeah place it in the WR unit, but make sure the WR have a unit champ!
you could drop the branchwraith and maybe a unit of glade riders... I think that would give you enough points for a treeman. (2xeagle + GR + branchwraith = treeman). Not sure though if that is the path you should take. Depends on what you do with the magic part. The treeman has a bound spell so that makes it quite a nasty surprise for the enemy. But you have to drop the branchwraith taking away one PD.
well in the end there is no "perfect playstyle" so go test it out. But bear in mind, choose a phase (magic, movement etc..) and stick to it in a list. Otherwise its a bit of everything... and that means nothing is really good, or nothing is better than what the enemy fields!
hope this helps
Thanks for your reply. I was going for magic defense rather than offense which is why I didn't take the level ups (since they don't give me any more dispel dice). I want to take a Spellweaver due to the cost of the Wand, I do like re-rolls against VC and DE but I guess I could drop her in favour of 2xL1s, if I kept the Branchwraith that'd still be 6DD.
I was planning to use the eagles to keep my heroes very mobile, give some additional protection and some additional attacks should they end up in CC. I guess I could drop them from the heroes and take a Great Eagle in a rare slot. I'll think about that.
I think I'd rather drop a unit of WR than lose the GR, also something to think about, thanks.
key, but still... you are putting a lot of points in magic. But only for defence... that means that if the enemy doesnt field a MH army youre screwed. But if you go MH as well... then it doesnt really matter what the enemy fields (you still have the defense, but now with the offense!) and sure its expensive. But I think that if you lose 2 eagles you are almost there.
well something to think about
Actually, I like the list basically as it is. I have run similar lists in the past and they have done quite well. While you may be a little unoptimized against non magic lists, it is a small price to pay for being able to handle magic heavy lists.
As for changes, I would suggest, I would replace one unit of wild riders with another unit of wardancers. Then drop a unit of dryads and get some waywatchers. You need something to have a chance against heavily armoured units.
That is all I have. I think the list is excellent.
I am right 94% of the time, why worry about the other 3%.
Thanks SirKently, I'll have a play around with the figures for wardancers etc. and see what I can come up with. I've never used WW so I'll have a go at proxying some to figure out if I can make good use of them.
