Welcome to Librarium Online!
Long story short, i am a daemonhunters player from the 40k range that stumbled upon the land of Fantasy, and more importantly wood elves. From the models to the tactics, i jsut love them through and through. however, lacking any experience with Fantasy, i don't really know what's good and what isn't, so i've come here to ask you guys what things would be good to get for a starting army.
By the way, I LOVE the wardancers and waywatchers. I'm not too fond of the tree spirits though.

the battalion box is a great place to start.
you'll use nearly all of those models in EVERY list you make.
in addition to that...i'd add a box of:
Dryads (you'll likely roll with 2 units)
This will get you to a 1k list easily with stuff you'll use in nearly every list.
Wood Elves Record (since i started counting)
Below 1000pts: 1-0-0
1000 - 1999pts: 5-2-2
Above 2000pts: 7-1-0
We wont hold that against you.... for too long.
For purchases, the battalion box set is a great deal and as mentioned previously, you will pretty much use every model in it for every game.
He is correct, however. Asrai lists are a challenge, but can work. Using forest spirits adds a lot to a WE list.
As for starting out, I bought a battalion, a noble, a box of wardancers, and 3 blisters of waywatchers to start. And then spent more and more until unpainted Wood Elves haunted my dreams (they haunt them still).
With the battalion, you may end up with a few unused glade riders, but other than that everything is useful.
Thanks for all of the advice guys. my mom really likes it when i plan things out.
Still though, at what points value should i start bringing wizards into the force? I know how heavily some armies rely on magic, so i just wwant to know when i should prepare for that.
Around the 1500pt to 2000pt mark you should start getting serious about magic defence.
Wood Elves have a couple of options
1. branchwraith, level 1 with the cluster of radients
This gives you a total dispel pool of 4 dice.
2. Spellsinger, Level 1, 2 dispel scrolls.
There are variations but they are they basics.
Option 1 is great at lower point games as you also get a character moderatly good in combat. I generaly use option 2 at around the 2000 pt mark and a version of option 1 as well.
The amount of magic defence you use depends greatly on how agressive your list is. The more agressive it is the less magic defence you need.
Good basic army at 500 points:
Noble or Spellsinger
5x Wild Rider of Kurnous
Best part of this that both the Dryads and the WRoK will put a vice on the in coming units, hitting them hard. Glade Guard I'd put in a row.
