Welcome to Librarium Online!
I just interested in the opinions of all of you regarding spellweavers.
nothing wrong with spellweavers, they serve their purpose, and have the ability to take different lores of magic. To be effective in the magic phase wood elves need a lot of magic.
people just tend to take combat characters as they are cheap and efficient and then take suitable anti magic defence
Nothing wrong with them. It's just that they are very expensive and take up a Lord slot. Most people would rather have a TMA or a souped-up Highborn to lead their force for various reasons. Also there's not much a Weaver can do that 2 Singers can't.
WE are a magic defensive list, not offensive. The scroll cady/brachwraith+CoR combo is usually sufficient. With this in mind, its much better to use your Lord slot to compliment the fighting aspect of the army: Higher leadership, awesome items, and the ability to deal out massive amounts of damage.
The complimentary nature of the Lores of Athel Loren makes it very hard to suck out dispel scrolls.
BPN is right though. WE are a defensive magic list, not offensive.
Wood elves simply cannot go offensive with magic.
The weaver is still useful as a defensive character though. The extra pt of ld can be useful over 2 singers.
Highborns with the exception of putting them with EG are too expensive to take as well. That only leaves the treeman ancient as a viable lord choice. Often you don't want any lords in a WE list.
Personally I run 2 singers for my magic defense as I don't need the ld.
Looks like these gents have it just about covered. Spellweavers don't add significant magic defense to compensate for their high cost. Access to Lore of Beasts is nice, but for the most part, you're just hoping for Bear's Anger which, while mean as all get out on an alter kin, isn't going to make the game for you.
i sometimes take them, in a 2k list i tend to take a weaver, a noble and a singer.
lore of beasts is great with WE, shove some growth on him and you have a suped up treeman... evil... very evil
Wash: This landing is gonna get pretty interesting.
Mal: Define "interesting".
Wash: [deadpan] Oh God, oh God, we're all going to die?
You can't put Bear's Anger on a treeman, but it works pretty good on a Branchwraith. I tend to use a Spellweaver with the Wand of wych elm as I haven't got the hang of using Highborns.
