With every (EVERY) elf in the new HE book having ASF, it seems our only option to take them down now is our trusty bows. However, white lions are a different story. Here's a rundown:
1) Can't shoot them effectively due to their 2+ save lion cloaks
2)Can't shred them in CC due to ASF GW's (unless you REALLY swamp them)
3) Can't outmaneuver them too badly due to forest walking
With those options exhausted, what can we do?
the only way to get ASF guys is to get them on the flank. They are too expensive to run in giant numbers. On the flank a unit of 15 can only get 3 attacks. As opposed to the 5 attacks in the rear or the 6 in the front and all the rank bonuses.
If I remember correctly, you can charge and only be touching corner to corner ~ the BRB mentions something about being sportsmenlike and sliding the unit over to maximize coverage, but I guess you could play the other way.
Treesinging might help agains them, but their magic is going to be tough to stop and their magic defense is even tougher. I wish they had made ASF an initiative rule instead, that way at least the dryads would have a chance to charge and do some damage. The only thing you can hope for, is that you know how to roll 5+wardsaves.
from what i can tell wood elves only have 2 units which can safely engage the lions. treekin, and treemen. these units sport high toughness which makes their S6 a bit less effective, have their ward saves and also sport a good high number of attacks. you will quite literally be forced to step on, and over, them with the woods.
spambot kill tally: 79
[16:19] <@Alzer> Arky's right though
[16:20] <@Kaiser-> I know he is.
[16:20] <@Kaiser-> He usually is.
[16:20] <@Kaiser-> Sometimes it's intentional.
[00:01] <+zubus> i love you, ya skirt wearin nothern monkey! ^_^
Looking over some stuff, i realised that our heroes have the best chances of hurting them. as ever, BOL and arcane bodkins will work wonders against T3. Also, remember to take your GW+Amber pendant characters, as the amber pendant overrides ASF.
they only have 1 attack, not that scarywardancers would beat them for sure in CC
2+ save from shooting or +2 to their save? doesnt make them invincible either way unless its unmodified 2+ :rofl , but you should shoot at swordmasters first, theyre dangerous
Wardancers would take them down pretty nicely.
If for some reason you are just terrified of ASF, the Woven Mist robs our haughty cousins of this ability pretty nicely. Honestly, my experience shows that it isn't worth the attacks you sacrifice for it. As Maraschino said, they only have one attack each. Hit them with anything with a ward save and go to town.
Against HE, it's not usually return attacks that does WE in, but static CR and magic. Don't forget that. The WE army are still superior strikers by far- we can take a lot of HE attacks while being able to dish out a lot of return hurt in CC.
Besides the amber pendant though, is there any effective way we can bring them down in CC without potentially having units killed first? I know that in most cases wardancers will come out on top, but they are quite expensive and not having them attack isn't fun.
Without potentially having them killed first? No. You just have to weigh the possible risk of it, as Wood Elf players are always forced to do. A unit of Dryads, for example, charging the front of a unit of White Lions (presumably 5 white lions vs. 6 dryads) - White Lions will (on average) hit 4, wound 3 or 4, and the Dryads will save 1, leaving 4 or 5 Dryads to press the attack. Dryads attack 10 times, hit 5, wound 3 or 4, and the White Lions have no armor save (unless they got Heavy Armor this time around) - So you're talking 2 or 3 Dryads taken down, vs. 3 or 4 White Lions taken down.
If you've remembered to hit them in the flank, things could easily go your way. Point is all of this doomsaying about how untouchable the unit is serves nothing.
And while we're on the subject, unless the White Lions are getting a serious bump in terms of armor this time around, Lion Cloaks make their save vs. ranged attacks 4+ (+1 for light armor, +2 for Lion Cloaks) - a 4+ save being no great reason not to shoot at them, especially when this save becomes 5+ vs. Glade Guard at short range. With the possible exception of Phoenix Guard, the elite HE troops still suffer from ranged attacks.
I was under the impression that ASF will be to the front only, i.e. if you charge into the flank then it's the normal chain of events.

The "A Smart Player Will..." theory is a complete paradox. If we make an assumption that everything we do is outsmarted, then theoretically we can never win.
