I saw a game between a HE player and a WE player and the High Elf player was using two bows that really ripped the WE player apart.
The Bow of the Seafarer? Counts as a bolt thrower, and
Name escapes me, but you get 3 strength 5 shots.
It struck me that these two bows were better than pretty much anything in the Wood Elf armoury.
The rest of the HE army had two repeater bolt throwers, 36 archers (3 units of 12), some magic defence and a unit of Phoenix Guard, Whitelions and a couple of Lion Chariots.
The WE player got shot to shred's. The HE player basically sat back and kept shooting until the WE player tried to charge. The HE characters had Greatweapons and pretty much cleaned up whatever came for the archers and the infantry and chariots took care of the rest.
I know my "standard" list would be hard pressed to fight that kind of army. Any tips guys? (I will be playing against that army sometime this week).
I got outshot at the last tournament I was in. I play HE (haven't touched them since May) but those bows can be really good. Personally I agree, that the magic bows in the WE arsenal are junk. I'm also a little upset that the only way we can get str 6 is with a great weapon. It didn't help that the HE opponent had a star dragon (outmaneuvers, causes terror, and shoots st4 breath weapon) both the Bow of the Seafarer and the Reaver bow and 3 repeater bolt throwers. It didn't help that I couldn't hit anything and he rolled to hit and wound 75% of the time.
yeah, the Bow of the Seafarer and the Reaver Bow are pretty nice. It's good to see that a shooty HE army did well.
Seems like a pretty nice list, might have to try it out myself
"I am the architect of fate!"
ahhh, Reaver Bow. I was racking my brain trying to remember.
The Repeater Bolt throwers really chewed through the Galde Guard. They just couldn't compete.
Dryads, Dryads and more Dryads. These guys will render most of the shooting useless (I don't know the rules about the repeater bolt thrower). With skirmish, the bolts can't penetrate ranks, and at long range and skirmishing the enemy is at a -2 to hit minimum. Backed up by the high T and ward save, very few Dryads will be fallen by shooting. Use these guys to screen, and advance towards the enemy.
A treeman would also be good in an advancing force as it will draw a lot of fire away from the squisier troops.
We also have some magical tricks up our sleeves. With the HoDA, Bow of Loren and any combination of magical arrows. Although some of these may be a one hit wonder, use the one hit the turn you get in short range. HoDA + 30 odd GG + Bow of Loren and magic arrows = a lot of hurt!
You can also go for the quick attack to a) kill the warmachines b) kill the archers c) kill the characters or d) attack those troops/ chariots!!! For warmachine, archer, and character hunting I would use Warhawk Riders, Glade Riders and/or a Great Eagle. For the rank and file Wild Riders are a safe bet, and if there is usually a lot of tree terrain, a squad of Wardancers w/ Noble w/ Moonstone.
Another interesting unit is a large (25) unit of Eternal Guard w/ Full Command and Warbanner. Accompanied by a Highborne with Rhymers Harp, Great Weapon. And if you want to ignore the 'always strike first' with a great weapon, assign another Noble with Amber Pendant and another Great Weapon, slowing down 3 enemy elves, whether they charged or not.
When all else fails Treesing units forward in forests until they are in range to do some seriouse damage.
Dryads are definitely on my list. A couple of things to consider with your post:
1. There is an item that makes the units attacks magical. This will negate the ward save of the dryads (if put in an archer unit)
2. Repeater Bolt throwers can do 6 shots as an alternate to the bolt.
I am thinking of taking a lot of wardancers. The Strike First dance could come in handy when I get the charge. Even thinking of taking scouts as skirmishing archers, I lose the glade guard bow but I have a better chance of surviving the HE shooting.
yeah, I rarely used the bolt thrower as a single shot. It was my long-ranged, armor piercing 6shot crossbow. I'll probably use 3 in my new HE list.
18 Strength 4 shots will make a mess of Glade Guard.
The last time I played against high elves was quite some time ago.
Nevertheless I hid most of my army including my archers which completely confounded his strategy.
I say you shouldn't try to engage right away.
Dryads are still your best bet as well.
How about Eagles? they should easily pick apart archer units, and warmachine crews, as well as being able to close the gap early.
If you have Bow Envy, you should give him some. Our Waywatchers are incomparable to their Shadow Warriors. In fact, they're in different leagues. Showing up behind his units, and doing more damage than they can.
Another thing to consider would be the Tree kin (resilient creatures too) and Treemen. Hard to kill with shooting (face it, the TM's Large target rule was merely an equaliser- or an attempt thereof) and once they get in combat, the ASF and Amulet of Light (or whatever it is) shouldn't do a whole lot.
