Welcome to Librarium Online!
I did a quick search of the forums to try to find an answer to this question, but had no luck, so here it is.
What is the appropriate size base for a glamour kindred spellweaver/spellsinger with a unicorn mount?
I recall reading another thread where the posters were lamenting the size of the unicorn's base as compared to conventional cavalry, but didn't see the base size actually listed. Does it reside on a 50mm x 50mm base?
Thanks for the help!
The old base size chart, which I can't find online anymore, states it's 50 x 50. The only reasoning I can give to state that this would be correct is that I did see Gav Thorpe once respond to a question about the Great Eagle's base size.
The question was posed because the old base size chart gives the eagle's base as 40 x 40, but the new eagles were being sold with 50mm bases.
Gav's comment was that he didn't know of any reason that the old chart's information would be any different for the new army book.
If you take that as any sort of foundation, which is iffy at best, then you could argue that the unicorn should be on a 50mm base as stated on the chart.
A better argument is that it's a monstrous mount, like the great stag, and should be on a monster base.
In the end, it seems yet another question that GW has left WE players with, despite a release date of 2 1/2 years ago. (I have an ongoing gripe about the lack of a WE FAQ, if you can't tell. )
So...It's unlikely that anyone will complain when/if I mount them on a 50mm x 50mm base?
I have both of the Reaper unicorns, I cannot recall the model names off the top of my head though, Starmane or some such.
I'll probably combine them on the base with a conventional floaty looking spellweaver/singer mini, so the mini won't be riding the unicorn so much as floating above it surveying her demesne.
Sort of a caster and companion animal vignette rather than an actual mounted look.
Clearly, I haven't even begun to put it together yet though, so depending how that looks as it evolves it may get scrapped in favor of a more traditional look.
50x50 and you'll never have a problem. I use 2 cav bases next to each other. I would think a 40mm base would work as well. It's the normal size for the monster base or any regular 3wound beast. I don't care if they rank up well to other cav or not, I would prefer the smallest base possible.
Personally, I think if GW is so concerned with base sizes they should fix the rules of targeting characters and their mounts. There are very few ward saves that you can get for your mounts (WE are the exception in having 1-2 that affect their mounts) and I think what they did with Tyrion's mount works better for stags and unicorns than having them be monstrous mounts (I think they'd be taken more often if they were US 2 and they weren't so restrictive in who could take them)
And I love the reaper unicorns, but actually use their celestial lion for my unicorn or sometimes the lions from the new HE chariot which I have painted.
If the end result isn't too disgraceful (since I'm just getting back into the hobby and was never that expert to begin with) I'll try to get a good picture and post it.
It likely will be some time before it's complete though.
The unicorn has to be based on a 50 x 50 mm base, according to the direwolf FAQ Here (the closest thing you'll get to an official FAQ)
on the modelling thing - man thats a cool idea, I"m thinking of bandwagoning that idea myself!
