Hello LO and wood elves,
This is my first post and will try to keep it short. I play 40k a bit and am looking at fantasy but I need to pick an army, I picked my 40k army units because some part of it (was the eldar fluff that got me) struck a cord with me. So I've been looking through the armies to see if something would jump out at me and I think I've found it in the wood elves but i want to be sure.
I saw that you could field an Army that would be almost completely made of animals/trees and thought that I could make an army based roughly on the DnD druid class. Basicly several casters with dryads, treekin, treeman, eagles.
I want to know if this is a good army to play? I understand that one with the elves and the forest spirits working together would probably be more flexable and overall better. But can the general idea work?
Also a couple of questions on units, I want to keep my army as a full forest spirit army so my casters would have the kindred that makes them that (sorry forget name) and I would like to get unicorns for them(druids on unicorns just seem so fluffy for the army), would this be possible?
The treeman and the giant eagle take the same spot in the army I believe, would an army using eagles instead of treeman be effective? most of the listed I have seen have one or two treemen. I ask because I want as many animals in the army as i can get to make it feel like the army I invision.
I do not have the army book or core book, I wanted to be sure the army idea was possible before I commit.
Thanks all in advance and sorry for the wall of text.
I am right 94% of the time, why worry about the other 3%.
Sure, you can pull off the army you want. You're right, it's less tactically flexible, the biggest deficit in my eyes being the limited ability to flee and misdirect. Since forest spirits are Immune to Psych, they have no choice but to accept a charge.
If you're open to using figs from other manufacturers, you can find lots of nice unicorns out there. Check out the modeling forum and look for a pinned thread of mini makers.
One thing to consider is whether or not you're willing to use Wild Riders. They're forest spirits but have maintained their elven bodies. Some forest spirit purists want only trees, but they do pack a wallop and have a lot of range, which forest spirits otherwise lack. Also they can bodyguard your glamourweave magic users, which otherwise would have to join Dryads or Treekin.
I'd definitely take a treeman for a list like yours. One treeman and one eagle. You need the eagle for war machines, march blocking, fleeing, sacrificing, but the treeman is an absolute monster. He's fun to play, mean as hell in combat, and sure to make the enemy take notice. Prepare for him to attract a lot of attention, but meanwhile your Dryads will be sneaking around the side door, ready to attack.
Speaking of the witchy, woody ladies, I'd load up on Dryads. I've played against armies with lots of them, and they can be tough. The enemy can beat off the first unit or two of dryads that hit them, but the third and fourth units that hit start to take a toll.
Treekin are tricky. I like two units of them, but they eat up a lot of points.
Thanks for the replies,
The treeman being such a mean unit was why I asked if I would be hurting myself if I went with another eagle instead of treeman, guess I'll have to make a choice on that, at worst I'll just have to get the models for both and see how they work for me.
I thought about the wild riders But I want to try and keep the humanoid figures down as much as possible. I did have a thought of maybe somehow putting figures of animals on the correct bases and count them as wild riders (them being lead by a hero on the stag or a unicorn i think would look very nice). would still want to have the real thing if people didn't ok them though I guess. does that sound possible or should I just choose on riders as they are?
Looks like I need to invest in an army book as the general form of the army seems to be effective. any other comments or suggestions would be very welcome.
I've seen a beautifully done Narnian Wood Elves army.
He painted bears, tigers, centaurs, and such. It was really gorgeous.
If you look around, you'll find miniatures of forest animals that you could pass off. It'd be a cool idea and look really great.
