Has anyone ever assembled a wood elf list that consists of nothing but elves with bows? I am expanding my wood elf collection and am close to being able to field an army with 40 Glade Guard, 15 Glade Riders, 12 Warhawk Riders, 20 Waywatchers, a Highborne (BoL, AB, and HoD), and a Spellsinger.
All told, that would give you 92 shots per round. Normally, I am not a fan of fielding a lot of Warhawks or Waywatchers, but the idea of surrounding your enemy, marchblocking him, and rolling so many dice that you would make Vegas jealous is really appealing.
Guys I play with insist that any list must have a core of solid hand to hand units, but perhaps wood elves are the exception.
I've never had the models to that at a larger game, but I really believe that WEs rely on a balance of shooting and combat. I've seen plenty of shooty armies not fare well. I'd try it for fun, but I think if you did over, say, 10 games or so, you'd find it didn't go so well.
I play Tomb Kings, and once tried a pure shooty army. I had 80 Skeletons that fired twice a turn, always hitting on 5's (BS 2, no modifiers allowed) - and three Screaming Skull Catapults, of which at least one would fire twice a turn...
It worked well until he flew a Great Eagle into each of my two units of 40 Skeles, so they only got to fire for one round (and somehow only killed two elves... with 160 shots...) and then in the second round two of my three catapults misfired and destroyed themselves... needless to say, I got annihilated. Final victory points were about 50 to me, 2900-odd to him...
So I'm gonna go an' say I don't have much faith in a pure shooty army, but if any army can pull it off, it'd be Wood Elves.
Or Dwarfs. Or Empire.
Never tried an all-shooty army, but GG are just amazing.
The only thing I'd be worried about is heavy Knights (ie, T4, 2+ saving killing monsters), and ItP units (like Undead), when you're unlikely to kill much, or when panic tests become useless.
or anything with magic.
what would you do against something like VC or Deamons? Str3 bowfire? that means you lose the game by turn 3, when he gets in combat and eats your units with outnumber and fear.
eh... i'm not a fan of shooty woodelves. I typically avoid S3 bowfire like the plague. Having played HighElves, if an archer costs me anything more than 6pts, I leave him at the shop (hear that? I don't even BUY them).
With woodelves, if you want a list that surrounds and then rolls a bunch of dice, go skirmish/fast heavy. Take a whole bunch of Dryads and Glade/Wild Riders, maybe a few warhawks if you like the models, and some wardancers and waywatchers. What you have is an army that will easily dodge all the incoming nastiness and play the VP denial game until turns 5-6, when you charge multiple units against their weaker ones, and break them apart. You win by small margins, but you actually win consistently.
wow 92 shots... the people i play with get bored when i only have around twenty... might just want to tourture them now... but anyway, that sounds like the perfect wood elf army. From what I've read, against low leadership armies(horde) that kind of build would be terrific for causing panic.
