Some units can take away rank bonus. Most units do not, but what units do? And wich ones are the best?.
The mission of this thread is to try and rdeuce the damage from the biggest draw back in our army, hand tp hand.
What are good units to hit the front and what are the best to flank with?

For wood elves the following units can take away rank bonuses, assuming they have at least unit strength 5 left:
Treeman and Ancient
Dragon riding highborn
The best one normally is the wild riders, as it is easiest for them to get in position, and they are good in combat. Next would be the treemen and dragon. After that the pickings are slim. Glade riders have the best chance to get in position, but only should be used against weak opponents. Other usually have trouble getting into position unless the opponent has been turned to the side.
I am right 94% of the time, why worry about the other 3%.
As I said in the other thread, could you please use proper grammar in your posts? The rules state that posts are to be in English (Rule 8 as found here) If you have any questions, feel free to PM a staffer with them.
Sirkently hit the nail on the head here. Any unit that is US5+ after swords and axes are swung, and isn't a Skirmisher denies ranks.
The best way to deny ranks is to bait units out, where they can be set up for multi-charges. Glade Riders are generally best for this redirecting job, I find. As to the units for getting into combat, it depends on what you have available, really. Remember that you still get +1CR for flanking, no matter what special rules your unit has.
in one of my recent games, I had a flak free and rode my wildriders down it to threten the flank of the units he had in the middle of the board. he repositioned one unit to accept the charge and re-direct the wildriders away from the other unit. insted what happened was that my wardancers ran down the middle and charged that unit in the flank, which gave the wildriders free reign the next turn.
point being, most people know what units you have that can negate ranks and will attempt to stop it. Keep this in mind, because with the above example it worked out to my advantage. Wardancers cannot negate ranks, but they can pack enough of a punch that a flank charge will criple an opponent.
As far as units taking the front goes, i think the Treekin are the best. Their s5 t5 with armour+ forest spirit save means they can ge through some of the heavy armour, and take a hit back. Treemen are also good for this, and have stubborn, meaning the can hold an enmiy in position long enough to get flank support, but i pref to keep them out of combat and use them as artillery.
ok, thanks for all your help guys. I do have one more question though. Do heros on mounts add the unit strgnth of the mounts wounds plus the heros wounds?
example: a noble on a Great eagle would have a unit stregnth of 5 or is it just the mounts a 3?
1 from the mansized hero. 3 from the eagle.

hmmm I though that would have been a good idea but it doesn't work.
How do wood elves deal with chariots? My guess is treeman, dryads, and wild riders?
how close am i on this one?
Where can I read these rules about negating rank bonuses? I don't see this anywhere... Or, do you simply mean you negate it by getting a flank attack, etc.?
Thank you for any responses.
Right, I get what you are saying. It just did not process for me, before. Thanks for the explanation.
