Howdy tree-huggers, ==Me== here.
==My== search for a new army continues and despite ==My== instrinsic non-spiky elf hatred I have come to WE. So I have a few questions.
==My== idea for a WE army would be heavy on the forest spirits. Fluffwise, I'm thinking of a renegade treeman wanting to take back the forest from its elf oppressers and rallying his followers. Any elves in the army would be "possessed" with their bodies and minds claimed by the forest to cast out their fellow usurpers.
Obviously this cuts down the options on the army, but would it be viable?
I'd probably use something like this
Wild rider Noble
The idea is to have a highly mobile army that has some hard hitters that can go anywhere and do anything. I figure nothing but skirmishers and fast cav with a couple monsters in the mix would be good.
Now, I ask, would that be too restrictive or not viable? I like Wardancers too, would they be a good addition?
Check out ==My== blog: www.bnhblog.blogspot.com
Going with the forest spirit theme is a viable option. But it doesn't fit the highly mobile army type. You would want to concentrate on combat with a dual treeman list, which of course begs for you to have a BSB. Wild riders for flank charges against things stuck against a treeman works well. Treekin can also pack a punch.
The other option is for a drycha list. This gives you a little more in the magic phase, and deployment is awesome, as you really don't have to deploy much. Only works if you can and want to use special characters though.
So yes you can make a viable list with what you want to do, just not a really mobile one.
I am right 94% of the time, why worry about the other 3%.
Heheheheheh. I hear ==you==; not spikey is not good. That's actually why I chose Wood Elves. Dryads = very spikey!
I've got a Drycha list, but I've never taken it to a tourney, and I don't play it often. But... I'm in college, I don't play often at all.
I really liked it! I found the teleportation and deepstrike rules really helped off set it's comparative "manueverability issues". It's a bit terrain contingent though, and that makes me nervous about taking it to a tourney.
When you do have trees, the Drycha list can let you throw 2D6+2D6+2D6+bound3+bound3+bound3+bound3 powerdice at treesinging. (drycha, lvl two Caliaingor caddy, and 2 treemans). That can rain on most armies' parades.
I love War Dancers. I usually use them with an amber pendant and shadows coil to take heavy cavalry charges (of course, some cavalry charges they can't take, and they obviously can't go in a drycha list); and they're still amazing without it, as they can easily get 21 S4 attacks on the charge. I've got some 20 that I converted from Glade Guard and Dryad Sprues.
(and you can check out the ultraforge Treewoman, if you want a spikier treeman. It's about the same cost, but the model is MUCH cooler!)
It certainly does work and there are several good builds.
Treeman - Ancient or otherwise
Treekin - Are a great unit
Wildriders - Characters and units fit nicely (just remember the Wildrider characters don't lose their bow, so you still have Hail of Doom Arrow acess, which in forest spirit lists is very handy)
Spellcasters - Glamourweave almost a must.
Branchwraiths - good choice.
Dryads - Solid.
So a versatile army could have
Noble Wildrider with HoDA
Spellsinger - glmaouweave - dispelling
Branchwraith or not.
3-5 units od dryads
2-3 units of wildriders
1-2 units of treekin

The "A Smart Player Will..." theory is a complete paradox. If we make an assumption that everything we do is outsmarted, then theoretically we can never win.
Drycha is great as are tree men but you have to be careful in movement. lack of ranks hurt so flankand rear them so you start at +3 combat res taking away there ranks.
Daemonic cheese-how? Well, you would need to start with daemonic milk, i guess...
I think drycha cann take care of the 3 ranks. =P
5 hatred atacks will usually get atleast 3 wounds. I usually get 4.
You can hope to get flank charges with dryads too, on account of deep strike. Or peel off a rank by hiding treemen in woods amd stranglerooting out.
Also Wild Riders. There are always options. (and the army looks sweet anyway!)
Wild Riders are the best fast cav =P
you can't take drycha and a spell singer. When you do have trees, the Drycha list can let you throw 2D6+2D6+2D6+bound3+bound3+bound3+bound3 powerdice at treesinging. (drycha, lvl two Caliaingor caddy, and 2 treemans). That can rain on most armies' parades
Yes you can. Just take glamour weave kin.
