Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hello all, I'm kind new to the forums, but not neccessarily new to the FB/40k universe, but I am indeed just trying to now start on my first army(ies). I was thinking of going Wood Elves to start off with.
I like the look of the WE and was also thinking about how they would do on the TT. I'm not planning on jumping in right away to the TT, but I got some questions to ask.
1. Are they rewarding to play? Fun to play over a period of time?
2. Can it be challenging to play them? I'm hoping I get some challenge so I don't roll my way through, thats how we get better anyways, but I also don't want it to be tough as nails.
3. Also, is it possible to give me some ideas as to what to start off with in order of what I should get for a basic 500 then slowly building up to a 1000 point list?
4.I'm aware that it also is dependant on my gamestyle - but I plan to try to stay fluffy too - so I'm thinking going GG and Lord w/Great Weapon as a starter?
Any other information would be great.
Anyways - thank you all in advance.
Don't do it!!!!!!!!

Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.
In a more serious answer...
Wood elves are a very decent army, and like the other 2 elf armies they are really quite versatile.
They are competent at range, decent in combat but not massively great in the magic phase.
I'm afraid I wouldn't consider them a particularly friendly starting army, being as they dont escel in any particular area.
In answering your specific questions.
1. Yes and yes over a period of time (due to the various ways to play the army)
2. Yes - on account of them not being able to dominate in any particular phase, but rely on good generalship to win through.
3. The batallion box set is a good thing to look at, gives you 3 of the basic units so that you can quickly see what direction you want to go, after that I personally like Wardancers
4. If fluff is important to you then you can play any way you want. Wood Elves are really great with fluff so if that interests you I recommend the army.
I dont know if you have any friends that play WFB but if they would be willing to let you play with proxied models then you would get a better idea about how the army will go for you.
Other than that, good luck, and enjoy the protection of the Glade
Thanks for posting guys.
No need to apologize Sammy, I come across some idiots too once in a while.
Also - I don't have anyone I can play with yet, my brother was thinking of trying to get into the hobby too.
So far it seems like a good choice to me, I just want them to be fun - even if i do lose - i just want the fun of them giving a nice fight back. Is that this type of army that can deliver some nice blows - and be fun to play even if you do lose?
I agree with strato. They are a tough army to get used to, but once you do they are very rewarding. You can make varied armies, so you don't get bored playing the same thing over and over again. The only real deficiency right now is magic, and there are builds that can overcome this to a degree.
I am right 94% of the time, why worry about the other 3%.
My good friend who I play all the time plays WE. While the WE have like a trillion special rules for each of there units the variety of strategies that can be deployed are immense. Unlike some other sides he is able to deploy and adapt to a variety of situations that my VC can only wish of. (I just cast zombies at the unexpected). With a good miz of tough close combat trees and quick shooty elves in makes it a lethal combo. Whatever you chose welcome to WHF and LO. If you have any questions feel free to pm me.

Are wood elfves hard to play? I want them to be fun and not so frustrating.
I've been reading around on LO and I'm just seeing the Wood Elves maybe being for more experienced players? Thats ok if i lose in the end - I'm just hoping that its not consecutive and annoying.
And by chance, when do you guys think a new WE book will come out? I was also looking at some bretts as another choice but I still got my main sights on WE's.
Wood Elves are classified as a "micro army" which means you have specific units very good against some and very weak against others. Other "macro army" would be like ork, chaos, etc... where you overwhelm your enemy.
You definately won't be deceived in terms of strategy ; they are a heck of fun to play. They become weak in magic def. since the new editions of dark elves, deamons of chaos, and probably lizardmen armybooks but you can always manage to win. And the models look awesome.
My advice for starting is Battalion Box set + lord with great weapon + eventual special units (wardancers,...)
For wild riders (I use them every game, they rock), if you find them ugly and expansive I have a tip : buy 12 dryades + 8 glade riders and turn your cavalry into mutant dryads ( 8 dryads + 2 glade riders + 6 wild riders)! 1: they are plastic 2: they are fully personalizable thus unique 3: you get 20 dryads for two units of 10 4: 10 glade riders for 2 units of 5: your army looks total kick-ass!!! etc... I'll post a picture soon.
Eventual Branchwraith will be essential. Then use 4 remaining 1" x 1" base for 4 new dryads that will actually look like some kind of Spite Swarm - that way you have 3 units of 8 dryads !
