Right, *I'm starting my first ever army with the WE. I have one box of GG but i need some advice on what units to get next and how to play them well. I'm looking into a 500-1k point force. All comments welcome. Thank you
I really recommend the WE battalion box set.
It is brilliant value and will give you a solid start to your army.

The "A Smart Player Will..." theory is a complete paradox. If we make an assumption that everything we do is outsmarted, then theoretically we can never win.
Honestly, with wood elves it's hard to go wrong. All of our units are useful. I think the best place for any new player to start is the battalion box, as it gives you a selection of core units to choose from. Also, glade riders can be converted into wild riders and glade guard can be converted into waywatchers. If you have some skill with green stuff, you can even convert dryads into treekin.
The only two things I would suggest staying away from are warhawk riders and treekin for now. Both units are good and are worth taking, but they cost $20 each (msrp) and are therefore very expensive for their points cost, especially given that they are niche units you probably won't take in every list.
All that said, if you have a bit of cash available to you, I'd watch ebay for a week or two and see what comes up. I bought my entire wood elf army off ebay and got a fantastic deal -- over $1000 worth of models for $325 shipped. Granted I'm having to go back and strip a LOT of models and correct some assembly problems, but that is part of the hobby =)
Thanks guys, there's one on ebay with £10 off (approx $17). I'm on my way now with WE!
As stated, anything and everything is what you will want/need.
just as a note, read the book for the minimum unit sizes. don't exceed that as it isn't very often that you will want more than the minimum. get a variety of units and see how you like each one before you start to double-up.
i would get a spellsinger and noble or lord as well as the battalion box
