Welcome to Librarium Online!
Got a 2k game against VC at the weekend. Just looking for any advice, mainly with a possible ghoul launched flying vamp and a large high points, hard hitting, super hard to kill probably with regen unti.
He's not likely to take blood dragons, last time I just played cat and mouse with them around the table. Magic heavey is a distinct possibilty.
Anyways any advice, or your own experiences against VC would be appreciated.
Well, if he completely cheeses out you are going to have a tough time. I would suggest taking strong magic defense -- possibly even a spellweaver general with wand of wych elm. If he is going for cheese don't hesitate to respond with a strong list of your own -- dual treemen, bsb etc.
It sounds like he is going to try for a points denial strategy with a death star. I suggest you try to beat him at his own game. In general, your units are faster than his and you have the advantage of ranged fire. Keep away from his units as much as possible and concentrate all your fire on units that can actually catch yours. Just run him in circles slowly bleeding a few VPs here and there.
As far as magic goes, don't get too focused on stopping invocation. The real threat is Vanhels danse macabre. If he gets that spell off, his units can become very quick and might actually catch yours... so stop it at all costs.
Don't try to massacre him... just go for a small victory.
Yeah, generally, if you get a unit in combat, even in a magic heavy list, he won't be able to raise dead and cast dansemacabre into combat. Which will make him strike first AND re-roll to hit. You absolutely can't let him get that off.
That also means it will be harder for him to outflank you. You should actually be able to outnumber the nechrarch list at the beginning of the game.
Also, I've found, if you only mitigate the raise dead, you can do enough damage to eventually destroy units, because of crumble rules. Assuming you can win to begin with. Reason being, if WE win a combat, there's usually nothing left alive to strike back. If there is, they don't win.
The scary unit is the wights with the regeration banner. If he brings that, just avoid it; there's almost no way to reliably kill that thing.
Well from my own experience I did very well against VC with a unit of 28 eternal guard with full command, warbanner, a highborn with the ryhmers harp and annoyance with gw, a bsb with the fear causing banner, and on either side of that I put a treeman to protect its vulnerable flanks and if he puts something in the front you can flank and take away his combat res immediatly on your turn.
The banner gets rid of the fear check and gives magic res agianst winds(?) and his magic missile, and you start out with a large amount of static res and stubborn plus a fair amount of attacks.
With that and two units of archers, and some scroll caddies I managed to draw 2 and massacre 3 against my roommate.

I've always been skeptical about the usefulness of Eternal Guard. Hmm... I guess if you say it works, it works tho! Lol!
You can have success with eternal guard. It plays to a different style than the normal wood elf list. 3 stubborn units, with a BSB has really good staying power.
I am right 94% of the time, why worry about the other 3%.
I can see an EG deathstar like that being good against vamps. It'll hold well with rerollable stubborn and will actually mince up any basic undead units quite nicely. Just watch out for cairn wraiths. Blood dragons and black knights can be trouble, I'm sure, but you should at the very least be able to hold out against them for a while.
As long as you can keep your flanks clear, black knights and wraiths are not really that frightening. When you start with a massive +7 to CR and you have a 5+ ward save your opponent will find it hard to beat even if you cannot wound them and for undead that's the next best thing.
Plus if the wraiths come for you, you can stop them with a treeman's strangle roots .
blooddragons on the other hand will still be a problem, I try to bait them away with a unit of glade riders so they stay away from the EG unit.
Hey guys, thanks for the reply, sorry I wasn't able to get on last night to reply myself sooner.
I was hoping you could expand on a few points.
I've never really used a bsb in my WE force and have so far seen this more as a waste of points, could you please expand on how this could be useful vs vampires?
As far as keeping my units away from him, I usually deploy 3 units of 10 glade guard, 2 in lines and one 2 rank block on a hill. I find these far less maneuvarable than the rest of the army, but really with the points cost of a GG I want to be able to fire every bow I have. Any advice here would be helpful.
Blooddragons I don't have a problem with, easy to give the run around to, and as such he wont take them.
There is a chance of a uber hard vamp lord with black knights and possibly a vampire, banner etc etc (he likes his big killing machine units). This I do fear as I can never set them up for the flank charge that I would need (bait with a great eagle maybe?).
I generally take a spellweaver with wand, a spellsinger scroll caddy and a branchwraith with cluster, but this is a huge points sink.
Would waywatchers have any luck against VC? I've noticed that mainly his spell heavey vampires are always burried in units and so taking away any chance of sniping them off.
Anyways, I'll prob draw out my list tonight and let you know what I come up with.
A big block unit like Black Knights are just asking for a mullering at the hands of an Alter noble with great weapon or bodkins, as the heavy armour is going to avail them not very much, and an alter noble can possibly forge through a flank and kill the Black Knights easily enough.
The ideal Deathstar in VC is the Grave Guard with standard of Strigos, BSB Wight King with DK Banner and the Helm of commandment nearby on a Vampire, with a corpse cart to allow miasma to be cast. This is a massive investment in points, and a WE army should be able to merrily skip around it easily enough.
