So, given Hydras, Greater Daemons, Stegodons, Trolls, and the low leadership ilk of monsters in general I've decided to try taking a spirit sword in my all-comers list. (Traditionally I run 2x dispel caddies, and a standard alter with a rotating lord choice.)
That said, I'm thinking of the best delivery system for my spirit sword.
I'm planning on giving him:
An Annoyance of Netlings or Stone of Crystal Mere
I could make him a Highborn Alter and keep my Standard Alter. Alternatively I could drop my standard alter and mount my highborn on a dragon (which I've almost finished converting and really want to be able to use)
It seems to me double alter kins are more flexible, being screenable, having a HoDA, and 360 line of sight. But a dragon seems scarier.
Although, they dish out the same number of s6 attacks from a double charge, the a dragon can take a beating in combat (where an Standard Alter can't) and can break ranks. Also, not having a great weapon he can grind out better if it comes to that.
So, I have to say, I'm pretty torn.
What do you guys think?
I personally love the dragon mounted spirit sword. You can use your opponents units as a screen and fly charge over them. Or you can just fly behind them and terror bomb them, and then rear charge them next turn. And yes, dragons are much more scary than single models. Just watch out for warmachines, they can rip your dragon apart. Its best to take them out quickly if you can.
I like the Spirt sword + dragon idea
actually much more than the alter highborn.
my dragon allcomers only uses 1 scroll caddy, and comes down to a lot of active magic defense. Which is alot more frustrating than just scrolling, but gives you ALOT more damage potential
Hmm. Thanks for the input! Rep happens now (for both of you).
I'll definitely go with the dragon then! Gives me a reason to use the model.
I think since I won't be using the standard alter I'll give him:
The Spirit Sword
The Helm of the Hunt
Annoyance of Netlings
The Spirit Sword
I'm definitely leaning towards the second build, as I'll need to slam him into monsters, but could easily be convinced to change my mind.
(I'll probably use the first build if I fight Daemons, so as to be able to fight their greater Daemons.)
Yes, if the highborn d6+ld is less than the opponents d6+ld then the highborn take the difference in wounds
Its good for taking out monsters like stegadons and hydras. Not so great for monstrous characters like GUO.
I am right 94% of the time, why worry about the other 3%.
Yea, you must be very selective as to who you attack, or be very lucky
I quite like him as a homing alter missile. Kill easy creatures like steg and hydra then charge the expensive general, there is a good chance you will die but also a very good chance you will take him out as well and get general bonus.
