Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hey, I've been musing on Wood Elves lately, and as everybody knows, their two primary weaknesses are their squishiness and magic in general. Squishiness can be circumvented by dancing around the table and gang-banging enemies, but it seems that magic can only really be negated in the list-building phase of the game. So, I was wondering, what kind of magic do y'all tend to take, and how do you deal with enemy's magic? Do you use the Wand of the Witch Elm, take low level mages, Level one branchwraith with luminescents, or do you hunt the enemy's mages? Also, I'd really like to know of any offensive magical setups out there, if anyone uses it.
I'm too lazy to come up with a witty sig.
I only use a level 1 Branchwraith, - I use my Waywatchers + Waywatcher General (Bow of Athel Loren and Arcane Bodkins) to hunt their wizards. I figure the less casters, the less spells. I haven't been impressed with Wood Elf Magic at all, there doesn't seem to be that much of a kick unless you can throw a lot of power dice. So my philosophy is - Kill em all!
The only effective setup that ive used when it comes to offensive magic is a lvl2 with the item that allows multiple casts of treesinging, in combintation with a treeman and another lvl2 spellsinger. The second one had a powerstone and a dispell scroll.
The treesinging can be quite aggressive if you can get it into base contact with an enemy!
But normally I just bring my lvl1 scrollcaddy and thats that.
PS: I used that setup in a 1000pts game.
I use magic a fair bit, and Treesinging you have to stop 1" away from the enemy, you can't mow them down easily with Tree Stampedes!
Fantasy: Wood Elves, Dark Elves, Beastmen and Tomb Kings.
LotR: Misty Mountains and Rohan
Ive recently been playing a new list with a lvl4 Spellweaver with lore of beasts, unicorn, glamourweave kindred, glamourweave, wand of the wych elm. I've been pretty impressed by it so far, but its no highborn on a dragon of course. Who wants to play against a dragon anyway? It also challenges me as a player more.
I would take 1-2 scroll caddies or a branchwraith with radiants as well. I usually completely shut down my opponents magic, out shoot, and out maneuver. This allows me to really pick the combats that I want.
The 3 best lore of beasts spells are bears anger (turns an alter or a branchwraith into a killing machine), the beast cowers (This allows us to shut down or slow down the big units of cavalry or giant monsters that usually beat us up), and the hunters spear (a lot of people don't like this spell because it doesn't case d3 wounds and is only 24", but with a lord on a unicorn it is fairly easy to avoid being charged and find flankshots on units.)
Like I said, I've been having a lot of fun with it and I'm pretty impressed so far. But of course sometimes you don't get the spells you need (like beast cowers) and you don't have much defense against the enemy monster that will eat whole units by itself.
So nothing about stopping before hitting an enemy. You cant move when there is an enemy inside, but thats not the case when you cast it to move and it moves over an enemy.Choose a direction and the wood moves 1D3+1" in that direction.
I dont really think a forest stampede is strage, the trees could move around a unit... and then when you can cast the same spell another time the trees would hurt them by kicking them and stuff...
however it states
"The wood stops moving as soon as it comes into contact with any other unit or piece of terrain"(Wood Elf Army book, p 79)
Which means the the enemy unit you made contact with is NOT even partially in the wood, just standing next to it
Usualy I take a spellweaver, and either 2 spellsingerss and branchwraith or just 3 spell singers. Of course there are also 2 treemen with their bound spell of tree singing.
I moove the forests with my army, and it get to the enemy. I also like the 2nd spell of the lore of aethel loren, becouse the spell doesn't require line of sight.
Even though I am quite new to this army and I only played 5 games with them, I still won all 5 of the games that way.
