'ello fair denizens of the forests! (and dwellers of dark gaming rooms)
Im rather new to these forums, and stuck in a rut on deciding on my next army after i finish building my rat horde
Im deciding between the fey elf-folk of Athel Loren, and the glorious men of the Empire.
I know from playing against both armies, their extremly different in standard army builds, and play tactics.
I love the idea of a fast moving/skirmishing army (wood elves) and the hetergenous mix that comes with playing Empire.
What made you all choose Wood Elves, whats a good place to start (battalion maybe?) and whats the cons, besides an outdated book? (which I here is being renevated soon)
Any advice on deciding which forest to dwell in (Athel Loren or Averland) would be much appreciated
Well, I think the mini's, the tactics and the overall feel got to me when I was trying to decide which army to command.
The outdated book is an con, but to be honest it is far from impossible to win... WE are still pretty strong because of our skirmishers and decent firepower.
Other cons are the fact that an armour save is something unheard of in the WE army. The best you can get is a 4+ when you are fighting with a noble (hero level; shield+light armour+parry bonus)... which is hilarious compared to most other armies. And the lousy magic phase is a bit of a turn off (but that might change with the new book).
A good place to start is indeed the battalion, then buy a noble and get yourself 8 Wardancers (they come in blisters of 3 I think). Then I think you are pretty much set... add a spellsinger and maybe some more Dryads/ Glade Guard depending on your play style... and you can play some good 1000pt games...
I have both. I love the empire fluff, but I like the wood elf play style better.
Wood elves was the third army I bought. Lizardmen were first, before I knew how to play (I bought it second hand on a big discount). Second was orcs&goblins just becouse they are the funniest army. Third I chose wood elves (only about 2 months ago) becouse of their powerfull tactics.
I always field magic lists with wood elves, and actualy I don't even have a noble in my miniatures. I think that a batalion, a treeman and 3 spellsingers should be enough for 1500 games. With a spellweaver, another treeman and another unit of dryads you can even play about 2500 points. Maybe a wardancers unit to be more versatile and you have a complete army.
