I was wondering what the other "old" book is? My guess would be Dwarves or Bretonnia, but I'm not sure, I've been away from the game a few years.

There are three books that are the oldest:

    Brettonia - 2003
    Wood Elves - 2005
    Dwarfs - 2005

The second oldest set of books all came out in 2008 (WoC/Daemons/DE) or 2009 (Lizards/Rats)
40k: Silver Angels of Our Martyred Lady 7/2/3 - Daemons of the Great Squiggle! 3/1/0
Fantasy: Windhost of Athel'Loren 2/0/0 - Daemons of Another Great Squiggle! 0/0/0
    Warmahordes: Legion of Everblight (Absylonia)

They didn't need one, and the Wood Elves and Brets were both written with 7th edition in mind despite their release towards the end of 6th.

    The release was (iirc)
    6th Edition
    Brettonians
    Dwarfs
    Wood Elves

    7th Edition
    Empire
    High Elves
    Vampires
    Dark Elves
    Warriors
    Daemons
(I think Lizardmen were in here somewhere too)

    8th edition
    Everything else.
I am not offering any comments regarding the Banner of the World Dragon at this time. For my thoughts on the situation, please refer to the following scene from vintage film: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYiv76qRCkA

Empire has to be included in the 8e set now, and Beastmen should be in 7e, though it was right at the tail end of it.

Beastmen was the very last army book released before 8th edition and as you say right at the tail end of 7th ed. So, was Beastmen written with 8th ed in mind? I'm not very knowledgeable about Beastmen. Does it play like an 8th ed army?

It sure does. We love our Hordes, we love our magic, and we love our chaff. I've found that most successful 8e armies pay attention to these 3 aspects, though obviously exceptions (notably Ogres, Warriors of Chaos, and Wood Elves) exist to the "Hordes" part.

Just out of general interest, with the motive of possibly starting a new army, what is that one build Wood Elves are limited to?

As before, what would those 'some armies' be? I pretty much know my gaming group and the armies there and one thing I don't want to start is an army that is destined to always lose...

We have glade guard for core, a bunch of treekin, maybe a treeman, and a weaver. Pepper with some eagles, and maybe a dryad unit, and a BSB.

I would like to know that as well. I don't feel destined to lose against anyone, though it can be a struggle.
