Welcome to Librarium Online!
In my gaming experience with the wood elves, I realized that the characters have a hard time doing anything in combat, except for the bladesinger. At best a sword of might and enchanted shield makes an decent punch, but outside of that it's hard to accomplish anything. Should we get a better wargear section?
And also I tend to go for mages over characters, since the lore of life is too sweet to miss out on. Is it just me?
The problem you have with an elf character is that they are quite weak in combat. I play dark elves and tend to pick a high sorceress rather than a combat general as she will cause more damage. The toughness of an elf makes them very easy to hurt and even with magic armour etc they still tend to fall down dead. My friend plays using wood elves and had his general on a dragon, still ended up dead after one challenge (then the dragon went nuts and attacked some dryads, came very close to peeing myself laughing at that one  ).
I think it is something you just have to accept as an elf player though, elves are more subtle than tooling up a complete death machine and getting stuck into a fight.
Helper monkey, bring me beer and donuts
Pansy Elves all suck in combat, they are really no toughnesss and have no punch, so go with a non combat chararctor like a level 4
