Hi wood elves
I need help i'm new to fanatsy but i have played 40k. People keep saying that wood elves are really hard for a beginner and that new models are coming out soon but i can wait. Most people are saying elf armies are really hard to play but i like them so much. My first 40k army was Eldar and i am at the moment working on my second army Witch hunters. Witchhunters and eldar both have the toughness 3 problem like wood elves but witchhunters have good armour saves so that will save them. Do Eldar and wood elves have a similar enough playing style and are wood elves good at magic because that is the first thing that drew my attention to fantasy. Should i try a different army if so which one? I like magical but challenging and rewarding to win with. Are wood elves for me?
WE are geting redone very soon, so you probably should hold of buying them. If you're like me and like the old school models, collect them today! The we are a very unique army, no-one else is anthing like the we. WE twist around the enemy, swirl and surround them, retreat then countercharge. Most of the WE units are skirmishers and therefore play differently to the normal rank and file units. If you like magic, and affiliate to elder, try high elves.
But never EVER fall into the "Elves Are Good With Shooting" thing with High Elves.
HE Archers are, to put it short, crap.
Wood Elf Archers:
Pros: incredible Longbow bonuses, can be taken in small units and can walk through woods without penalty
Cons: No armour options, costs one point more than DE Crossbowmen/HE Archers
Dark Elf Warriors with Repeater Crossbows:
Pros: Repeater Crossbows are excellent, can actually fight due to full combat kit (Light Armour, Shield, Hand Weapon give them a 4+ Armour save in close combat), cheap if given only light armour and crossbows (in which cas ethey can't fight though. The point for shields should generally be well spent...)
Cons: Repeater Crossbows have shorter range than Longbows (which is compensated by the excellent Multiple Shots rule)
High Elf Archers
Pros: One point cheaper than Wood Elves, option for Light Armour
Cons: NONE of the WE benefits, Light Armour alone is useless (you need the armour bonus from Shield+Hand Weapon to make it worthwhile)
In short, Dark Elves can be cheap (11 pts with RXB and LA) or good at close combat (12 pts, full kit), Wood Elves are excellent (13 pts, special rules and small unit sizes) and HE just suck (12 pts, no redeeming factors).
And, as for Wood Elves, they definitely require strategy, and their magic isn't that bad:
Their Hero-level wizards don't get +1 cast/dispel, but get a free Longbow and a bonus spell (the hated Tree Singing). They can only use Life or Beasts though (Which isn't a big deal: Life is good and Beasts, while not amazing, performs well enough)
Their Archmages are cheaper than HE/DE, still get a free Longbow and Tree Singing, can choose any Lore from the rulebook and have +1 to cast Life and Beasts spells.
Use Light, Beasts, Metal instead of Heavens
NecroLords: Use at least one Death Mage
Brets: Use Peasants&Damsels
Skaven: Don't use Skryre SAD
While High Elf archers suck, HE do have the dreaded RBT's, which somewhat make up for their crappy archers. Their shooting aint all that bad...
DE get them too though, so they are still the shootier army.
High Elves have the best magic of thee three elven armies, so if youre going for pure magic then they're probably the army for you.
We are more challenging to play though, and have very different tactics from any other warhammer race, making them an IMO the most interesting choice.
I find this is the biggest Quality over quantity army in the game, Hell some list have lest models in it than Ogre Kingdom !
