Welcome to Librarium Online!
guys do you think forest spirits is the way to go, or a mix of all the units to make up a wood elf army
(What type of Wood Elf army will you run?)Here's one discussion on the matter.
I haven't tried all forest spirit as I don't have the models, but it's hard for me to imagine one working consistently against all armies. It depends, to some extent, on whether or not you'd include wild riders. But two treeman, several treekin, and lots of dryads are nothing to be sneezed at.
But I find the archery too good to pass up, as well as units like wardancers.
the WE and forret spirits supplemet eachother, so it is a good idea to take a mix, otherwise you limit yopur CC abilities ar if you take FS you don't have any archery.
I agree. In 2000 pts I usually take something like this:
2 units of archers
2 units of dryads
maybe a treeman
1 unit of Wild Riders (I love 'em!)
2 units of Wardancers (I love these maybe even more than wild riders)
Maybe eternal guard (depends on the treeman--but I do like a BSB in with Eternal Guard and a treeman nearby--rerolling break tests for two stubborn units just ain't fair)
Characters change to suit my mood, but I like branchwraiths and an alter noble and at least one magic user.
Still, I think the most consistently effective army list comes from a mix of forest spirits and asrai
IMHO, the "forest spirits" are the most powerful units in the army. The only thing you'd lack in an all forest spirit army are shooting (which doesn't matter because nearly all shooting is WAY overpriced in warhammer anyway), and magic (this could hurt you).
But as far as I can tell, there's nothing preventing you from taking an army of Dryads, Treekin, and Treemen and then taking all wood-elf characters (The best of both worlds).
I find it a bit disturbing that the Dryad is not only severely underpointed, but it's also now a CORE choice. The only saving grace is that without ranks, the Dryads are still going to have a somewhat difficult time winning combat. But to be honest, I'm a little bit surprised that we aren't seeing a lot more "All trees" armies hitting the board.
I like the mobile WE armies, so this may be biased however:
You'll find yourself in a bind when it comes to shooting and charging. Magic is mediocre at best. Skirmishing Dryads are next-to-nothing without unit to back them up, so they'll just wind-up as screens for your other guys
Good stuff though is... 5+wardsaves! and Fear/Terror on everything and Multiple wounds on almost everthing
Tactically, what would you be doing? You are going to be kind-of-forced to march to them without missile support of any kind. You can't wait for them to attack you (unless they are really dumb) because you have no missiles to drive them out with and even Orc Arrer Boyz will be able to just walk up, stop 2feet away and shoot at you for about 2turns.
But like I have insinuated, you will rock in CC once you get there.
