I think they'd work. You'd have sneaky waywatchers or scouts. Outstanding archers. Expert horsemen. Wardancers seem to fit the martial arts sword fighter profile really well.
I'm not sure how you'd incorporate forest spirits, but then again Japanese mythology is chock full of spirits. Treekin could be big sumo spirits. Treemen could be a nature god.
An alter noble would be a perfect one-man super ninja killing team.
So yeah, I think there's plenty there for you to work with.
Did you have any units in particular in mind?
i had never thought of it before, but now you are mentioning it...
DavidVC04 makes some good suggestions.
as a martial art practiser myself (i have a black belt in Karate) i think their would be a lot of potential.
Concentrate on waywatchers and wardancers. They can be the super elite. you could even give the wardancers cloaks since they don't wear any armour anyway (just like a ninja).
the waywatchers can be ultra stealth ninja's.
you can use spewllsingersand weavers as the ones who communicate with the nature gods (japan's original religions was, i think, focusd on forefather and nature worship but i am not sure) the wildriders can symbolse this link and the forrest spirits...
i'd say take a wardancer highborn a waywatcher or alter noble (assasin:shifty: ). further take a spellsinger and branchwraith. then max out on wardancers and other things you like.
Keep usupdated, i myself am very interested on how your progress will be.
i think wood elves could make a sweet ninja army
along with all the other suggestions you could try to convert this model of an elf mage
i think it would look like a cool leader
I think the Eternal Guard would make a decent ninja team... duel headed spear.
The Wild Riders of Kurnous would make a awsome quick attack unit in the dead of night, and the Waywatchers and War Dancers are a must! If you could get rid of there "leafy" aspects, I think this could be really pulled off ^_^!

I'll be honest I am not the most familiar with Japanese mythology, but I do know they believed in Demons. I don't see why you couldn't use some demon models and just use dryad rules or Treekin rules. As long as the correct bases are used and you explain what the unit is to your opponent before the match nobody should have a problem with it.
If they do have a problem with it I don't think they are the type of people you can have a friendly match with anyways.
Never posted before but as a wood elf player and collector and someone actually living in japan right now (originally from Scotland) i loved your idea!
One essential piece of source material would be the Anime movie(manga, cartoon) "mononoke Hime", i think the english title is Princess mononoke, its pretty easy to get hold of outside of japan.
Its set in an ancient version of japan and involves, wait for it, an ancient tribe and armies of forest spirits led by their magic wielding princess fighting the invading humans...could you get more wood elves??? Anyway the dirctor is Hayoa Miyazaki and id reccomend all his stuff (spirited away, naussica), they all have strong enviromental themes and great snippets of japanese mythology, very wood elfy!
some japanese horror movies would be a great source to capture the terror causing aspects of the army too, like ju on and ring and stuff!
also i remeber seeing a great army of Imperial Cathay on the american GW site made from the brettonian list, could be a help although ancient chinese and japanese are pretty different.
Remember also that some of the WHF races are loosely based on real armies, i remember reading in one WD. orcs are scots, beatsmen are germanic tribesman and apparently dark elves are samurai. still, i like your wood elf idea better!
Well, if you wanted historically accurate ninja, you'd probably do best with Empire free company or some such thing. The ninja were a peasant movement, albeit a scary one who managed to hold off big armies.
If you wanted pop culture ninja, and just ninja, you could proxy clan eshin I guess, or wood elves as you said, but I'd use dogs of war duellists and combine them with 'samurai' heavy infantry/cavalry from the list.
Kias's sources are good, although Miyazaki's mythology is pretty much self-created, it tends to have a few stands of the original stuff in there, and films like mononoke capture a very vivid portrait of the atmosphere of Japanese folklore.
I'd also recommend the series 'Mushishi' for the same reason, plus it's abseloutely beautiful. Just don't take it too seriously.
Oh, and 'Kai Doh Maru', it's short and incomprehensible until you start reading up in the Heian period, but there's a lot of folk mythology and religion in there if you dig deep.

Any chance of using ogres as spirit sumos to replace tree-kin. Just use green stuff to scult a blindfold. Sure its not very ninja like but with a bunch of black/midnight purple/ grey with blood flowing out of their blind folds would make an amazingly intimidating unit to accompany your ninjas.
"Heresy is like a garden weed, it won't stop feeding until you... BURN THE WHOLE DAMN GARDEN WITH A FLAMER, BURN IT, BURN IT TO HELL!!!!!" "Is there a wittle puppy in the garden? ITS A DAEMON! BURN IT!"
I think that wood-elves would be very good at being a Nippon army. This is two-fold
1. The High-Elves, at the height of their expansion had the Tower of the Rising Sun (amazing how GW does stuff like that) right in Nippon (which, by the way is not 'GW' Japan, but the ACTUAL name given to Japan- actually means Land of the Rising Sun). That said, it is easy to fit the Wood Elf story of being left behind into the new setting.
2. The Samurai class was not all as well armored as we think. Sure they had that cool looking stuff, but that stuff just so happens to be wood slats. However, the common misconception of there being mobs of knights, is also true for samurai. Samurai- really, good, 'hollywood' samurai- are rare, because actually anyone can up and declare himself a samurai. Samurai armies were actually backed by LOTS of peasants. This in mind, the wood elves have good, quick mounted cavalry (the samurai) and lots of trained, spear-fighting infantry.
IMO using the Waywatchers is cool, but don't go really heavy. Ninja aren't seen on the battlefield, they are see slippin' you a micky in court . So, no Ninja. What the others say is true, the Japanese are pretty nature-oriented. Tree spirits Kami as the Japanese call their spirits, would work without change. Magic- still good. Nobles- shoguns, still good. Wood-Elves are the 'accidental' Nippon army of GW, it just takes a history lesson and willingness to restrict some of your choices.
Good luck, hope you like playing woodelves. Have fun with your chopsticks.
