Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hello to all,
On the weekend I had a game against Dwarves with my Wood Elves.
Lets just say that in the end I had one model left and leave it at that.
Now, the biggest problem in the game was my inability to deal with the Anvil of Doom. This thing doesn't need LOS, has no range limit and doesn't need to roll to hit. In 2 turns my opponent used the ancient power of the anvil and wiped out a unit of Wildriders, a unit of Glade Riders, a Spellsinger, a unit of Wardancers and a unit of Glade Guard.
2D6 Str4 hits on generally T3 units with no save. Ouch!
I finally got into H2H with it with a unit of 12 Dryads. To my horror I find it is unbreakable, had a T6 for the Runesmith and a 1+ save for the Runesmith. I could only get about 4 dryads into contact with the Anvil. As you can imagine my 8 attacks did precisely squat. The Dryads got held up for 2 turns before they got flank charged and wiped out.
Now my question is. Have any of you fought against the Anvil and what tactics did you use to neutralise it?
Well, I played against one Sunday, but I just ignored it. Even so, I got lucky. He misfired three times, so I avoided the worst of it. I also managed to wipe him out, except for the anvil. I might have sent my two alters in after him if there had been time.
Was he using the special character? If not then there is only a fifty fifty chance that he'll get the ancient power, or misfire (mis-strike?:tongue
The special character is sick, the best in the game IMO, i've used him before and totally decimated entire armies with him.
I also think the best way is to avoid it, try to ignore it. In fact if it wasn't Thorek i usually hit the Rune of Wrath and Ruin on a 2+ simply to half an enemy unit's movement in the next turn, which gives me some more time to shoot with my artillary, which i find more reliable
I used it against a tomb kings player once. he used ICFB to good effect against it.
I don't have the WE book on me atm and i'm not really a player, do they have anything similar to that?
I haven't come across anything like that in all the times i've played them/seen them play
Well I was thinking of using my treemen to tie it up, but they got hammered by the 2 boltthrowers with Runes of Burning on them.
I tried avoiding it. Admittedly he was pretty lucky to get both ancient powers off (he wasn't using the special character), but by ignoring it, I allowed him to decimate my force. Five units destoryed by it in 2 turns well worth the points he paid for it.
Next time I'll send all my fast cav at it and engage it in H2H ASAP.
Well, only engage it with something that will last so you can keep the guy tied up. Runelords are so tough to kill that you don't want to get run off on the first turn of combat.
When I said I get to combat asap, I really meant that I just close to combat with whatever units I'm after asap so that he can't zap me with the shooting or half my movement.
Regardless, it's a damned tough unit to deal with.
well you could also try the follwing (combined with some good luck)
a unit of waywatchers shooting from close range.
if you can get a KB arrow on the runesmith...
the only thing is, to hit the damn guy, with the guards and anvil around..
