I remember when I started this army everybody talking about how shooty they were. Well after playing a bunch of games I really don't think that we are as shooty as people say.
In nearly all of my armies I use 3x10 GG and 20 Waywatchers. However, I just don't seem to feel like I get enough kills with my shooting phase to defend commentary about the WE being the shootiest army. I find most of my empire or dwarf opponenent will out shoot me and that is without them using the big stuff.
With the new WE armysbook they are alot more balanced, and you can accually have a close combat army aswell... I do belive that WE are more shooty, because of there abillity to be very defencive and with a fast responstime.

20 Waywatchers? *scratches head*
To each his own, I guess.
But, no, WE aren't the shootiest army in the game. Before the book came out Wood Elf shooting was hated were the 5-man Archer units. You only gained 65VP for killing one and they were Core, too.
Nowadays, Woodies are more of a close combat army. They are still not to be taken lightly in the shooting phase, though. They're the best or second-best archers in the game (Bret Archers are very, very good), and probably in the Top5 overall as far as shooting is concerned.
Use Light, Beasts, Metal instead of Heavens
NecroLords: Use at least one Death Mage
Brets: Use Peasants&Damsels
Skaven: Don't use Skryre SAD
Woode elf shooting is the best because we can manovouer very easily to get shots off.
Well they can't match dwarfs or Empire for shooting that's for sure. They are usually considered the shootiest Elf army though.
woodies are now indeed a tactical presiscion strike army.
they can strike in CC really hard but are fragile. their shootig is reduced to a suporting role (what shooting should be IMHO)
"Ask not the Eldar a question, for they will give you three answers; all of which are true and terrifying to know"
Here's the archery I take in my usual 2000 pt list.
20 glade guard.
2 alters--BoL/AB combo and HoDA
2 treemen with strangle roots.
I find it's plenty. Taking three units of ten archers seems to take up too much space, and too often terrain intervenes or there's a dearth of targets.
I shoot for two or three rounds while I position my skirmishing units and treemen. The archers generally shield the fighting units, which are all ItP, and flee at the first sign of trouble. I'll even toss them onto the flank of a combat if I think it will swing the fight.
What units besides the archers and waywatchers do you use? Do you have enough combat units?
All infantry shooting in warhammer is overpriced (and significantly so). A lot of complaining during 5th edition (where shooting cost about half what it costs now) led to GW upping the cost of bows and other shooting weapons to the point where they are now barely worth the cost.
Wood Elf Archers are one of the FEW archers in the game that are, IMHO, almost worth the points you pay. This is also true for Dwarf Thunderers, Empire Handgunners, Bretonnian Bowmen, Goblin Bowmen, and to a lesser extent, Jezzails.
The main problem with Wood Elf Archers is their cost. At 12 points a man, they aren't all that great. They have a better BS (by one) than all of the other units I listed above, but that means they'll be hitting 33% more often (3's instead of 4's) in most cases. But they cost TWICE as much as Bretonnian archers, for example.
IMHO, if you want a shooty army now, you really have to commit to shooting. Be prepared to spend a huge amount of points on shooting (33%-50% of your army points). Thirty Wood Elf archers aren't going to do much. 60 will.
Even so, be prepared to lose a lot, because those 60 shots a turn will usually result in only 20 wounds before armor saves. So with light armor and shield (the standard), you're only going to kill 13 guys a turn on average.
