So anyone out there use the Hail of Doom Arrow? I have to say I was prety excited to see this arrow make it from the old list to the new book. But while it looks sweet on paper im not seeing alot of army list with it and im starting to wonder if its worth the 30 pts.
I have used it a few time with great sucess! Twice I put it on my WW noble and twice he delivered. Granted I had great 3D6 rolls but that is the chance you take. I beleive I rolled 14 the firt time and 16 the second time I used it. Two different games of course. Like I said I usually outfit my WW noble w/ it.
I almost alway take it. I'll reword that. It's rare that I don't take it.
It's awesome. The average roll on 3D6 is 10. Occasionally, you'll roll low and curse the thing. Other times, you'll roll high and watch your opponent slump in his seat. But most of the time, you'll pound out 10 str 4 shots, most of which are going to hit.
Used against the right target, it's awesome. I would recommend that one item before pretty much anything else in the book.
There has only been a handful of games where I didn't take it. Most of those games I regretted it. The weapon is amazing. I have managed the magical 18 hits once and I can tell you it was so awesome to see my opponents jaw drop to the floor.
I often find I use it with my WW hero/lord to kill a character that an opponent didn't embed in a unit, in those situations I call it the idiot killer. The pts trade off is so worth it, I actually managed to take out a Vampire lord on the first turn once cause they didn't put him in a unit as he was supposed to hunt down my Alter Lord.
yep, i agree with every one. If you want to have very valuable tool, then invest the points in a hail of doom arrow....too bad you couldnt just take a quiver of them:shifty:
"This sure ain't no pansy Eldar Armor, Son"
185th Cadian Armored Div.
"One Shot, One Kill"
Western Border Patrol of Athel Loren
"Is it WORTH IT?" Are you high?? The hail of doom arrow is (imho) the single best item in the entire game of Warhammer. Even fired at *empire spear men*, you will statistically make up its points in sheer kills. No other item in the game is guaranteed to pull it's own weight. It can't be dispelled, it can't be blocked, (and with BS6 ignoring move penalties, you're hitting on 2s), and it will devastate whatever it hits.
Now this may be a personal rant, but I honestly find that arrow to be downright broken. If I play my HE or DE, I have to take into account that I WILL lose a bolt thrower turn 1. 100 points down for a 30 point item. If I play my chaos, I'm going to start the game with 1 less unit of fast cav than I normally do. I once lost 4 Black Knights to the damned thing.
It's really that there is no counter to the arrow. Bound spell items can be blocked with a dispel dice, melee weapons can be avoided by dodging combat. The HoDA though is fired on turn one, and guaranteed to kill *at least* 30 points. No other item in the game provides that much reliable damage.
In short, take it.
-include a noble/highborn with the hoda
-fire it on turn 1
-remind your opponent to take that panic test
