Default Very New to the Game

Hi guys,

I am very new to Warhammer: FB. To be honest, I was at my local gaming store four days ago, and I saw a few people playing the game and I was hooked. Since then I have been browsing the GW site and trying to soak all the information up that I can. I have definately decided to begin playing this game, but know next to nothing about it.

Currently I am trying to decide what race to start building. I only have a slight understanding of the rules and game flow, so I cannot expect to know weather I would enjoy playing a swift and mobile team or a slow and hard hitting team. So far the wood elves have caught my interest (along with the dwarfs and bretonnians) but I have some general questions:

Would the wood elves be a difficult race to learn the game with?

I have read that they have advantages in the forests. Do you always get to play with a forest on the board? Do you get to place it? The people playing at the shop said they just throw the forest peice wherever. It seems to me thats a bit unfair if you were using the wood elves. Or perhaps am I making too big a deal out of the forest?

Are wood elves fun to play? Im guessing most people will say yes here, but many websites have me believing that you just run and shoot and hope no one hits you. I imagine that it takes some strategy to play still?

Thank you for your time. I am very excited about this game. I am leaning towards the wood elves because I have always enjoyed their mythology or whatever. Additionally, I do like their models and feel like I would enjoy painting them.

Hey hey,

I was thinking about all those thing just a little while back, (about 2 months ago) and here's what i know

-Yes you can learn with wood elves (i love them)

-Yes they are fun

-No they are not just run around and hope noone hits you (dryads, treemen, wardancers etc are all effective. Just not as effective as running through someone with ogres)

-Don't forget about painting, don't collect an army if you don;t like the models.

the other two armys was choosing from were Dwarves and Brets too, I settled on the elves because they had cool models and i love to play more with tactics than run towards the enemy and hope. Dwarves are slow but hurt when in combat (and they are freaking pin cushions when it comes to arrows) Brets have awesome cavalry.

Ok, in the wood elves rules you place 1 forest yourself (i think it is 6" diameter), the rest that are on the board you decide with the person you are playing with... most people role for terrain in certain areas of the board.

Anyway, the other race you might want to consider is the new empire army, They have a great range of units so beginners and experts can pick and choose with variety.

(choose wood elves, they have a great mythology, cool models and you get versatility if you want to play shooty army, hand to hand army, or a mix of both)

I hope that helped, there are people here who can explain better, and i'm sure they still will. but this should get you to understand a little better about what it is all about (i hope)

Well, i actually started Wood Elves when they firstcame out, and wow...i havent looked back since. Their are alot of cool armies out there...New Empire, Vampire Counts, but i find that the Wood Elves are a good Choice. How could you not like a army lithe assasins, who pack serious killing power? also the thing that won me over is the noble with great weapon......he rocks my socks...one of the best GW sculpts ever! Whats important is that you like the hobby, you like the actual models in the army, and then your set, nomatter what the army you choose.

(p.s.) if you need help with army building, or painting, this is the site for it. The people that prowl the Wood Elves page are all wonderful people, and can help you out with everything Wood Elf related......

I really appretiate the responses. I am still not sure about starting the wood elves, but I am definately leaning towards them now. Most of all they have captivated my imagination a bit. I love the idea that the trees come to life to fight along their side.

The models from all the races look wonderful though. It definately is hard for me to choose just one! Overall though, I like the story behind the wood elves the most, and I do enjoy their models. I guess I will keep thinking about it.

lol, yeah. It took me months to decide on just 1.

now my army is almost complete i am looking into the Dwarves (but thats alot of beards to paint)

But defiantly take your time and choose, i am now building my terrain around my colour scheme, it's so cool (i'll post photos in about 6 months when it's done (lol).

anyway, go for it, Warhammer rocks and everyone here is very helpful no matter who you choose

Hi

just wanted to throw something else in. I collect wood elves and personally i think they are one of the best armies to learn the game with.

why?

Becuase you will lose all your first games so spectacularly. they are very difficult to use if you havnt got a strategy sorted and really know the different units. Therefore when you start to win you really will have LEARNED the game! Can we really say the same about a chaos, brettonian or orc player who just boulders in and smashed everything to pieces! (dont flame me for that its just my opinion!)

i dont think i could have got to grips with charge distances, moving and outmanouvering, being able to choose which units to attack what with and working out how to create areas on the board that your opponent simply cant move across so quickly if i hadnt been learning with wood elves. Its a force that makes you really have to learn your army!

And once you do! You'll be running circles around the enemy.

to make up for your inititial embarresing defeats you get to paint and collect the army with the coolest range of models by none. i say rubbish when people say wood elves are not a beginers army. i think they are the perfect beginers army for that very reason.
