I gave GW a call today to discuss some issues with a WD order. I used to opportunity to ask some questions. The best answer I got was about the Spirit Sword.
If you aren't familiar with the Sword I suggest you pick up your Armybook and re-read about it.
While the question that I asked was about the leadership that you and your enemy use. The leadership that the unit uses is the leadership of the unit being attacked. They may not gain any advantage from Coldblooded or Skaven Rank Bonus or a general with in 12". However, you may use Callach's Claw and the Wraithstone effects to adjust the leadership of any opponent that you hit with the Spirit Sword.
I really do at this point consider this weapon probably one of the most overlooked Magic Items.
but its too expensive....a noble cant take it, and a highborn can take a better combination of weapons, also it sucks if you lose the dice roll, you could infact kill yourself. Also you would need two characters to use the wraithstone, and spirit sword combo. I think if you want a magical weapon you should go with daiths reaper instead. I would still stick with a great weapon, but thats only because elves are weak......i still like the great weapon and then the amber pendant. People hate it when i cut down there general without striking back.

I've never tried the spirit sword, not in a year and a half, but I should give it a go. It's be great against some high toughness, low leadership units like those damned stegadons.
What would the rest of the kit be for the highborn? Maybe on an eagle? Or in a unit of eternal guard.
If I am hunting Lords/Heroes I would use Armor of the Fey or Annoyance of Netlings and Helm of the Hunt.
If I was going to just cut down as many low LD enemies as possible like Skaven or Lizardmen I would give it something like Enchanted Shield and Helm of the Hunt.
Also remember there is still room for the HoDA with the Spirit Sword.
As far as Eagle or Squad it would depend again on what I was hunting.
