Why do people dislike using these guys? I mean, in hard cover they have -5 to hit, soft is -4 to hit. Most people will be hitting them on a -1 or 0. They seem like a good harassment unit, in fact a staple in an WEs army.
Firstly they are expensive points wise.
Secondly they only really come into their own against armies with lots of armour. Against horde armies they are a point sink.
The -ves to hit are good but the odds are they are only going to get targeted by things that don't need to roll to hit.
I'd rather they kept the woodelves could see 4" into/outof woods, that would offer them some protection.
For march blocking I would prefer scouts as they don't chew up those rare slots.
For me it just comes down to general effectivness, I play against a broad range of armies and don't tailor my list for the opponent. I've found that waywatchers very rarely pay for themselves.
i know that lots of people disagree with me on this one, but i love waywatchers. For me they're a must in all my armies. For armies with nice armour, they have lethal shot. If its a hord army they march block, and also can hunt for lone characters or elite units(every army had them). I also just do not feel good about taking another Treeman, and i hate great eagles so i dont feel bad about using that other rare slot up. No matter what army i play against, this unit always does the job, but they just require a lot more thinking and experience to play well with then other units. If you are also going to take them, i suggest 6, or more(so atleast one lethal shot). Personally i use 8, but most people, including myself, think that 8 can be over kill.
But remember Skarsgard that a unit doesn't have to pay for itself point(s) wise to be effective at all. These guys are awesome at taking out heavily armored things and they are a GREAT harassment unit. My Waywatchers have paid for themselves (points wise) in 2 games that I have played. Sometimes I use them to bait charges (because they are in a forest for the whole game) then turn around and assault with a unit of 10 Dryads or a Treeman for that matter. I also use them for their obvious reason......Killing Blow just looking at a players face when his tooled up Chosen Knight Squad gets wiped out is priceless. Plain and simple people just DO NOT LIKE to play against Waywatchers so an opponent tends to try to take them out a little more then they should leaving other units unharmed. If people are counting on these guys taking out huge bulks of an opponents army then they are sadly mistaken. Hope this helps!!!!!!!
Skarsgard and Redrose have some rep...both are valid reasons on likes/dislikes, GREAT JOB!
gotRending....have some rep as well for bringing this subject up! I love talking about Waywatchers!!!

If anybody disagrees with me Chuck Norris will roundhouse kick you in the face.....not really. But wouldn't it be cool?
Me no likey the Waywatchers. I also find them too expensive for what they do. Sure, they are hard to hit IF they have good terrain, but against magic and war machines, they're toast.
And getting killing blow is such a slim chance. I've never had good dice with it.
Also as for points, scouts can do the baiting bit more cheaply, and if they fail to flee far enough, I haven't lost such a whopping amount of points. Plus, scouts can take the banner of march blocking.
And to get killing blow, you have to be in short range, and against many units, that means charge range. If you get pinned in a corner, once again, toast. (No offense to _Toast_!).
I'd rather have an alter highborn with arcane bodkins and bow of loren for what is, IMO, better than killing blow. Five shots that can wound on anywhere from a 4 to 6 instead of just a 6. And he's more maneuvarble, though quite vulnerable to magic and shooting himself (but the briarsheath is quite nice for shooting!).
I just don't see that they do anything that other units can't do more effectively. The only time I had much success was when I took two units of 10 just for the heck of it and got a significant number of killing blows.
I agree with David here.
The killing blows are too far and few between. They are also too easy to avoid. Once your not in short range they are about as effective as glade guard.
It is true that they can cause dramas for warmachine crews and wizards (in hand to hand) they are too vulnerable and too easy to avoid for my liking.
As David quite rightly said, 5 scouts with the Banner of Zenith are more effective at march blocking and at long range, almost as effective at shooting.
Thanks for the rep.
I really like the idea of way watchers but find they do die far to easily. Dwarf organ gun from my one of my brothers and magic missiles from my other brother means in most games, they are not really and option.
I was just thinking about it and had an idea, would you take Waywatchers if they had the talinsmatic tattoos special rule? The ward save and magic resistance would probably be enough to get me taking them as they at least have a chance of surviving to do some damage.
I would probably look at fielding them then. How about you? Or do you think that would make them to powerful for their points cost?
To be honest having talismanic tattoos wouldn't be over powered but it wouldn't make me take them.
Maybe if they just had killing blow, not at half range but at long range also? But that could be a bit much.
If WWs cost the same amount and had the tatoos, then I'd be more likely to take them. Or if they had Jet Li maneuvers that let them vault over intervening units, that'd be cool, too.
But what would it cost to add MR and a ward save, even a 6+ one? At least 10 points a model?
Killing blow at long range would make them more powerful, but in my mind a little less fun. They would just sit in a forest on your side of the table taking pot shots the whole time, and that would be boring in my mind and not how they should behave.
Edit.. reply to David rather than repost.
I don't think it would be worth that much. Probably up them about 4-6 points per model IMHO.
But even then, they are over priced at the moment, as are the GG scouts.
