Okay, so I suffered a moderator mishap. I saw that I had created two threads, so in my attempts to merge them, which I accomplished, and then delete my duplicate posts in the new thread, which I over-accomplished, the whole thread was deleted!
So anyone who doesn't mind, it'd be great if you could repost your ideas...if not, well, that's what I get.
One combo I liked was, IIRC, lt armor, helm of the hunt, shield, sword of might, bow of loren, arcane bodkins
i'd be more than willing to repost my idea, but alas you have posted my suggestion in your post!
(though I am not sure what IIRC stands for) :w00t:
Armies: Wood Elves, High Elves
Warbands Campaign 07: 1st
San Antonio Alamo GT
I guess I'm curious about how you're using him. I think a lone hero on a great eagle would suffer a lot of the same drawbacks as a lone hero on foot (i.e. Alter) with only minimal added protection from the eagle.
On the other hand, I think combining him with a unit of warhawks could be very potent. Sure he can't "join" the unit, per se, but he can work in concert with them, creating mayhem all over the board. If equipped as you mentioned (or trodi mentioned), then he can be a nice fire platform with the warhawks, and can be the frontal charge to their flank, or even the rear charge. In the meantime, the warhawks can be positioned to provide him with some measure of support, be it by blocking LOS, or even giving an enemy something else to consider when thinking of charging your hero.
(Trodi - "IIRC" means something like "If I Remember Correctly". That one took me a while to figure out.)

I also take a unit of 3 warhawks and another great eagle, this one without a rider.
That and a unit of fast cav round out the mobile units.
I also take 30 archers, two units of 8 dryads, a large unit of wardancers, and lately 3 treekin.
It's a fun list, and maybe I haven't tried out enough games to know how well it works, but that highborn needs staying power.
A friend who has recently started playing WEs has the same problem--and he mounts his lord on a dragon!! The dragon lives but the rider is knocked off again and again.
Maybe the stone of crystal mere is worth it after all?
Well, scratch my suggestions for synergy then. Sounds like you've got it covered.
The Stone is worth a shot, I've just never been able to get past the shattering part. It might make me cry. If you try it out, be sure to tell us how it goes.
The usual happened today against dwarfs. The eagle took two wounds to shooting and died in the first round of combat. However, the highborn did live for a while, but the dice were terrible. Eventually he killed a master engineer but was then shot point blank by an organ gun.
What, and he didn't survive that? What a wuss.
Did you try the stone today or not?
No, no stone. But the good thing was that when he was on foot, he had an improved armor save thanks to the hw/shld bonus. Lt armor, enchanted shield, hw made for 3+ which saved his hide more than once.
The list I ran was slapped together last minute since I didn't get to play against Khorne (which wasn't so bad--it's the guy who we all try to avoid because he can be so irritating, but I figured what the hell, I want to play---and then he was an hour late! go figure).
sorry it's taken so long to repost but here we go.
Highborn on the eagle
Bow of loren
Stone of the Crystal mere
This fellow should never see combat . You could use Glamourweave but the eagle has no protection. That way if he does get in combat and the enemy has to take a ld test.
I think only wizards can take the glamourweave kindred - I don't think highborns and nobles have it as an option.
Seems to me the item combos you've been using and have been suggested should make him pretty well set. I'm betting you just need more time to learn how to use him.
